RE: My area team rankings
These are wrestling rankings, not football, and yes, seriously.
RE: My area team rankings
I would not put Cleveland ahead of Corinth-Holders. CH beat Cleveland in matches twice last year with Cleveland getting their win during a weekend multi-team meet, winning their last match to give them the win on a very questionable call. Neither school should be losing any players so in the immortal words of the Nature Boy... To be the man you got to beat the man.
West should have lost a great deal of wrestlers from last year. Still they have very good program.
RE: My area team rankings
I like Cleveland just a bit more than C-H. I do have C-H, Sanderson, and C Hill all right in the mix too. Preseason rankings are such a guess in high school wrestling. You never know how all the weights will shake out, who gets that dynomite incoming freshman, or the outstanding transfer. After even a couple of weeks things sort themselves out pretty quick.
RE: My area team rankings
Leesville is by far the best program in the region. There 182 Zarek stafford is probably the most complete wrestler in the state. Chris Pendergraft is also one of the best heavy weights in the country. This team is quick and agile as well as one of the most physically fit teams in the country. This team will be a major player this year!

RE: My area team rankings
You had a big change of mind about Cleveland and Corinth?
RE: My area team rankings
C-H beat a decent Rocky Mount team and Cleveland was smoked by Sanderson and lost to W Johnston in a close match. Its still VERY early. Weight classes are still being settled on teams, football players getting their "mat legs" and coaches learning the best match ups. I suspect there will be continued big movement for another few weeks as teams meet and end doubt and speculation.
Northern Durham was dropped to 9th, but will they stay that low? They had a tough first week. They have already seen Orange, Holly Springs, and Leesville in the first couple of days of the season. They will be a heck of a tournament team and tough dual team as the season progresses.
Jim King Open next weekend will be a nice heat check and many other events will be goinng on as the season cranks up to full speed.
RE: My area team rankings
Corinth has to wrestle Sanderson and Hunt on Tuesday. Nothing like seeing nothing but 3A and 4A teams when you are a 2A team so far this season but it will be a good indicator of how Corinth and Cleveland will stack up against each other with Sanderson being the common opponent.
RE: My area team rankings
I agree gsmusty, it is impressive. Wrestling is a high school sport where a little focus and hard work will have a huge impact. Far to many schools put little to no effort into wrestling. I would love C-R or Cleveland to become like West Wilkes. Year in and year out they have a team that can really compete and the community is behind them. Piedmont is another small school who can get after it. Croaton, Topsail, and Bishop McGinuess are some others who you know will be tough regardless of what size they are. On the flip side, I could name a dozen or more very weak "big" school teams in the area. Weak? By that I mean terrible! LOL. On a positive note a couple of perennial weak teams have new quality coaches who should quickly turn their programs around.
