The number of wins and losses is not as important as who did you beat and to who did you lose. Tournament strength is a factor too. Some teams are much stronger in one than the other; See S Alamance last year. Runner up for 4A individual tournament team championship yet probably not a top 15 dual team. This is a top 10 TEAM, not dual team, not tournament team, but overall team rankings.

gsmusty you have touched the key Year round. Almost every one of the top wrestlers are year round wrestlers. The top teams have many of their kids in year round clubs. MANY kids leave high school practice then head to club practice 3 times a week and go 4-5 times per week in the off season. It just makes sense a kid practicing year round will eventually be better than a November through March wrestler. The amount of time put in wrestling by the elite kids would boggle the mind of the vast majority of people. Between weight lifting, running, multiple practices per day all season long, off season practices and weekend tournaments (many kids get more than 100 matches in the off season) folks just cannot imagine the time put in to becoming the best they can be.

We have been to the Croatan summer camp the last 2 summers. Its a whole different world down there than it is here. Its a year around gig with most of it being "club" wrestling but it is definitely year around.

I actually would put Southern in the same boat as Northern and Jordan being very strong at the top but with holes in the bottom. Knightdale turned out to be a very competitive tournament. I thought the best match of the finals was at 120 with Allison from PC beating Bray from Croatan.

Nah, not at all :) Hard to believe that a 2A school in its 3rd year of existence can have a team like the traditional big boys do (Cary and Orange). Not that we are any where near them, but it takes a while to get your foot in the door.

After seeing Orange this weekend I make no argument there. They were pretty dominant.

I forgot to mention a new team on my radar, Southern Durham. I knew about Hayes, Midget, and Holder but the 182 and 195 stepped up this weekend in Knightdale and placed well, coming in right behind Panther Creek (w/o Chan).

I am completely on board with C-H now! Took me long enough huh? Millbrook, Sanderson, and C-H are very close. I have a hard time with Wake Forest, Leesville, NDur, and Jordan. Wake Forest has some real talented wrestlers and could surprise some folks before its over. Leesville has a solid team top to bottom, N Durham and Jordan have some standouts but also several holes in the line up.

I was starting a post about this and then saw you posted. I would have moved up Millbrook as well. They beat us this weekend 38-33 on the last match and though the N&O had us ahead of Sanderson last week, i could go either way on it. They beat us on the last match as well.

Not a bad argument...BUT I try to also factor in the teams tournament strength as well. Kind of a hybrid poll. Northern is a very solid tournament team. With Humphries at 145 now and you have Brown and Shepard taking first most all the time, throw in Oliver and Holmes you have a good tournament team. They may be a bit high. They produce, they stay. If they have too much trouble in their conference duals they fade away and a capable team jumps in.

Not sure if I fully agree with you on this one. I think that you have Northern Durham too high as they lost to both Cleveland and PC this past weekend. I would put them below Cleveland and move everybody up a slot. What do they say about opinions......

Carrboro is 7-5 according to nwcaonline.com. Going to be hard to get looks with that record.

Fuquay is certainly stronger than Athens this year, BUT Athens started with virtually nothing this year. Athens would go into duals with 6-7 wrestlers last year. This year they 13 or 14 every match and are building depth with back ups getting plenty of mat time too. While certainly not a strong team yet they made tremendous strives in the right direction! I hope they keep it up Fuquay? Ya better watch out! They could be a top level team with the new coach they have now. I can see a real difference in many of their returners. On the other end of the spectrum...What's going on a Wakefield? They were crushed again tonight and only had 6-7 wrestlers for a dual. The schedule looks skimpy and their roster is scary short. I hope they get it turned around.

Wake Forest is right there on the edge.

Fuquay and Athens are easily the most improved teams over last year. Fuquay is a bit better but Athens came from very close to zero from last year. Both have respectable teams now. Athens should be tough to deal with in a couple of seasons. Cary should get a little more healthy soon and will be a tough out in the playoffs. Panther Creek is going to be a player as well. several tough kids will make them a very solid dual team and I think they are a better tournament team. When all their guys are firing at peak performance they are as good as any in tournaments. Northern Durham is a team I've been waiting to see step up. They are a wrestler or two away from being THE team in the area. With Shepard and Brown leading the way and a couple other standouts peaking at the right time could make them a team to take note of as witnessed this weekend at their tournament they hosted. They won the tournament by 1 point over Holly Springs and just a few points back in 3rd was Panther Creek.

Thank you for getting this thread started. Based on what I have seen in duals, Bull Durham, and Mark Adams, It would look something like this.

    Cary
    Orange
    Holly Springs
    Panther Creek
    Jordan
    Sanderson

I have not seen Northern Durham yet and will have a chance to see them this weekend at the Inskip. I will see more teams the following week at the Sanderson Duels and provide a more detailed ranking then.

C-R has a good team. Regardless of size they are a good team. When they are in the playoffs there are several very good 2A teams out there, such as Croaton, Newton Conover, and Peidmont, all whom are still ahead of tough and rising Corinth Holders team. DSA is another tough team. I'm not sure if they are deep enough though. Ayden Griffen, SW Onslow, West Wilkes and Chatham Central are even smaller schools that can compete with about anyone.

Been out of town this weekend but the updates that i heard, Corinth was the only non-4A school there at the West Johnston Duals. Corinth beat Pine Forest, Chapel Hill, Middle Creek and West Johnston but did lose to Holly Springs, who the N&O has them ranked 3rd or 4th in the rankings this season so yeah they did drop one but won the other 4 which puts them at 9-2 so far this year with loses to Sanderson (ranked 3rd) and Holly Springs ranked 4th.

Holly Springs torched Corinth Holders 55-12. CH has a solid team. They nipped W Johnston in a good match.

Cary beat Holly Springs 33-31 Tuesday in a great match. H.S. acttually went 8-6 in matches, but couldn't stay off their backs. In my opinion, that was for the conference regular season crown and a playoff spot. Both teams should be favorites in their remaining conference matches.

Corinth Holders drops its first match of the season with Sanderson taking the decision 38-33. Just about as close as you could have gotten. The gym was rockin though. Sanderson beat South Johnston 63-6. Corinth was getting ready to wrestle South Johnston when i had to leave so dont have the score on that one yet.

I agree gsmusty, it is impressive. Wrestling is a high school sport where a little focus and hard work will have a huge impact. Far to many schools put little to no effort into wrestling. I would love C-R or Cleveland to become like West Wilkes. Year in and year out they have a team that can really compete and the community is behind them. Piedmont is another small school who can get after it. Croaton, Topsail, and Bishop McGinuess are some others who you know will be tough regardless of what size they are. On the flip side, I could name a dozen or more very weak "big" school teams in the area. Weak? By that I mean terrible! LOL. On a positive note a couple of perennial weak teams have new quality coaches who should quickly turn their programs around.

  • gsmusty Nov 24, 2012
    Veteran

Corinth has to wrestle Sanderson and Hunt on Tuesday. Nothing like seeing nothing but 3A and 4A teams when you are a 2A team so far this season but it will be a good indicator of how Corinth and Cleveland will stack up against each other with Sanderson being the common opponent.

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 24, 2012
    Veteran

C-H beat a decent Rocky Mount team and Cleveland was smoked by Sanderson and lost to W Johnston in a close match. Its still VERY early. Weight classes are still being settled on teams, football players getting their "mat legs" and coaches learning the best match ups. I suspect there will be continued big movement for another few weeks as teams meet and end doubt and speculation.

Northern Durham was dropped to 9th, but will they stay that low? They had a tough first week. They have already seen Orange, Holly Springs, and Leesville in the first couple of days of the season. They will be a heck of a tournament team and tough dual team as the season progresses.

Jim King Open next weekend will be a nice heat check and many other events will be goinng on as the season cranks up to full speed.

Leesville is by far the best program in the region. There 182 Zarek stafford is probably the most complete wrestler in the state. Chris Pendergraft is also one of the best heavy weights in the country. This team is quick and agile as well as one of the most physically fit teams in the country. This team will be a major player this year!

  • tarheelfan41 Oct 9, 2012

I like Cleveland just a bit more than C-H. I do have C-H, Sanderson, and C Hill all right in the mix too. Preseason rankings are such a guess in high school wrestling. You never know how all the weights will shake out, who gets that dynomite incoming freshman, or the outstanding transfer. After even a couple of weeks things sort themselves out pretty quick.

  • gsmusty Oct 8, 2012
    Veteran

I would not put Cleveland ahead of Corinth-Holders. CH beat Cleveland in matches twice last year with Cleveland getting their win during a weekend multi-team meet, winning their last match to give them the win on a very questionable call. Neither school should be losing any players so in the immortal words of the Nature Boy... To be the man you got to beat the man.

West should have lost a great deal of wrestlers from last year. Still they have very good program.
