Raleigh Word of God is back in familiar territory -- the championship game of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
The Holy Rams defeated Oxford Webb, 70-57, in the Shavlik Randolph Foundation semifinal in Friday's nightcap at Raleigh Broughton's venerable Holliday Gymnasium. They'll now face New Hampton, N.H., in the Randolph championship game at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
It's the first time WOG (9-1) has in a Holiday Invitational championship game since 2009; the Holy Rams won their inaugural HSOT in 2007 and played for titles in 2008 and 2009.
"When you're trying to continue a legacy, all we ask our guys is to just remember what's on your chest and remember who you are," WOG coach Quinton Jackson said. "If you can combine the two spirits together, nothing but good things are going to happen."
The Holy Rams were led by Tyrek Coger's 23 points and 9 rebounds. Jordan Whitfield added 17 points and 5 boards while Josh Newkirk contributed 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
Webb lost for the first time in the 2012-13 season to fall to 10-1. UNC recruit Isaiah Hicks had 24 points and 9 rebounds for the Warriors, while Mitron Terry had a double-double of 21 points and 13 boards.
"We're a little disappointed because we wanted to play in the last game of the tournament," said Webb coach Leo Brunelli, whose Warriors play High Point Christian for third place in the Randolph bracket at 2:20 p.m. Saturday.
"It's definitely an honor for Granville County and for J.F. Webb to be in this tournament, but it was our mission to win it."
