A storm system that dropped over a foot of snow in spots in the midwest is moving towards North Carolina, and it could produce a wintry mix Thursday night and into Friday.
"It is coming this way, but it's not going to bring a foot of snow by any means," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.
When the precipitation starts overnight Thursday, it could begin as a mix of sleet and freezing rain with some snow mixed it. As temperatures hover around freezing, icy spots are possible through Friday morning.
"The National Weather Service will probably issue a winter weather advisory for at least a portion of Friday morning," Gardner said.
The threat of winter weather could cause problems for conference tournaments if school schedules are impacted. Conference tournament semifinals are slated for Thursday with championships on Friday.
Some games must be played in order to break ties in conference standings.
If schools decide to change schedules due to the weather, it could impact the conference tournaments.
