Whiteville's Gore selected No. 3 overall in MLB draft

Whiteville star pitcher MacKenzie Gore was selected third overall by the San Diego Padres Monday night in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
The left-handed hurler finished his senior campaign with an 11-0 record with a 0.19 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings en route to the Wolfpack’s third N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A state title in four years.
Gore – committed to pitch at East Carolina – has until 5 p.m. on July 7 to decide whether he will head to Greenville or bypass college for pro ball.
According to MLB’s official website, the third overall selection in the draft carries a suggested bonus allotment of $6,668,100.
Gore was named the Gatorade high school baseball player of the year on June 2.
