— Wake Forest, the defending 4-AA state champions, opened the 2017 season at home against a previous conference foe – Millbrook.

The Cougars were in a close game for much of the evening, but ultimately secured a 34-7 win.

Demarcus Jones scored the first touchdown of the game for Wake Forest on a one-yard rush, giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

That score held through the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Wake Forest had the ball on Millbrook's side of the field, but a fumble was covered up by the Wildcats, giving them possession. Wake Forest forced a punt though and that led to more points.

A three-yard touchdown run gave Wake Forest a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Millbrook didn't go away though. On the ensuing kickoff, Tyler Snead fielded the ball at the 10-yard line and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. Wake Forest led 14-7 at halftime.

Things didn't start well for Millbrook in the second half though. Drew Homschek picked off a pass from Ford Werness and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, giving Wake Forest a 21-7 lead.

Then later in the quarter, Chris James connected with John Jiles for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Wake Forest's lead was up to 21 points, 28-7.

The final score of the game came with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter when Noah Stockton got in from eight yards out. The extra point was blocked, but Wake Forest still had the convincing 34-7 win over the Wildcats.

Wake Forest returns to play on Aug. 25 with a big non-conference road game at Richmond County at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats also return to play next Friday with a road game at Wakefield at 7 p.m.
