Swimming & diving state championships set to begin

Posted February 5, 2013

North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in all classifications of swimming and diving are set for the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

The NCHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled for February 7-9, with different classifications on each day. The championships will kick off on Thursday with the 4-A event, followed on Friday by the 3-A championships and then conclude on Saturday with the 1-A/2-A competition, all at the Triangle Aquatic Center.

Swimming will commence each day with preliminaries starting after the coaches' meeting, which is scheduled to end at around 8:45 am. Finals are slated to begin at 5:00 pm each day.

The diving for all classifications will occur at Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh. Diving competition will start on Wednesday with the 4-A divers, with warm-ups beginning at 1 p.m. and competition at 1:45.

The 3-A diving competition is Thursday, with all warm-ups starting at 1 pm and competition 45 minutes later. The 1-A/2-A divers will compete on Friday, with warm-ups starting at 2:00 and then competition 45 minutes later.

Several state championship streaks remain on the line in men's competition. Carrboro is the three-time defending 1-A/2-A team champion, although the Jaguars finished second to North Carolina School of Science and Math in the Eastern Regional standings on Saturday.

Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons has earned the last three 3-A men's state titles and five in a row over two classifications. Charlotte Providence has won three consecutive state 4-A titles but was third behind Hough and South Mecklenburg in regional competition.

Last year Cornelius W.A. Hough captured the 4-A women's state championship, the fifth different champion in the last five years. Hough’s women captured top honors in this year’s Western Regional, while Green Hope won the Eastern Regional.

East Chapel Hill and Greensboro Grimsley went one-two in both men’s and women’s action in the 4-A Central Regional.

Charlotte Catholic won its seventh consecutive 3-A women's state title in 2012 and has earned 11 consecutive NCHSAA titles over two classes. Raleigh Charter is the two-time defending 1-A/2-A women's state champion and rolled to a convincing margin of victory over second-place Carrboro in Eastern Regional action.

The Raleigh Sports Consortium is the primary host sponsor for the championships in Wake County and All American Swim Supply is a sponsor for these championships.
