Raleigh, N.C. — Southern Nash scored on their first possession and were able to maintain the lead to win their scrimmage 7-6 over the Lee County Yellow Jackets in the HighSchoolOT Jamboree.
Southern Nash used Nadir Thompson and Lorenzo Sessoms at quarterback early in the game, but Sessoms took over full responsibility late in the first half.
Using two quarterbacks during their first drive proved successful for the Firebirds. Sessoms pitched the ball to Zonovan Knight who ran it down the left side for a 35-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Overall, Firebird head coach Brian Foster was pleased with the takeaways from the game as they head into the regular season.
"We started well, then we started fumbling snaps and being a little undisciplined. Sometimes when you start that, it takes away that edge. We've just got to work on it."
Just before halftime, the Yellow Jackets were able to get on the board.
On a long fourth down, quarterback Colin Johnson found Jucobie Minter in the end zone on a 44-yard bomb. The extra point was no good, keeping the score at 7-6.
Kicking was a struggle for the Jackets, as they missed an extra point and multiple field goals.
Southern Nash forced a turnover late in the game and were able to run out the clock to secure the victory.
Both teams have some final preparations to make as they head into the opening week of the season.
Foster believes that they will see some similar looks from Green Hope next week.
"I was sort of glad with what Lee County did because I know Green Hope will do some similar stuff and they've got some really good skill people, that was good for us to see and see some things that we need to work on. We just have to be a little more disciplined."
Lee County travels to Northwood on Friday and Southern Nash comes back to the Triangle area to face Green Hope.
