Southern Durham rallied in the final minute Friday night to knock off rival Hillside for the first time in four years, winning 16-13.
Southern Durham broke through first late in the first quarter as quarterback Kendall Hinton scampered 19 yards for a touchdown, giving the Spartans a 7-0 lead.
After a safety put Southern Durham (2-0,0-0, Big Eight) up 9-0, Hillside (0-2,0-0,PAC 6) made their charge.
A 5-yard touchdown via the run brought things to 9-7. Then a deep ball from Nas Forte-Ferguson to Daeshawn Stephens set the Hornets up at the one where Forte-Ferguson finished the job and Hillside led 14-9.
But Southern Durham was not done. With 26 seconds left to play, Hinton connected with Jordon Brown who battled to get into the endzone, completing the Spartans comeback.
Southern Durham will play at Scotland County next week. Hillside will play at Gray Collegiate Academy Sept. 5.
