This season the ACC may not have been the best league in college basketball from top to bottom, but the conference was loaded with stars. Coach Mike Krzyzewski went so far as to say this past season the ACC had more great players than any year he could remember.

It is hard to argue with him, with returning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough along with teammates Wayne Ellington, Ty Lawson, and Danny Green all returning for one more season, North Carolina alone could have fielded an all-conference team. Add to the mix Duke's Gerald Henderson, who for three months may have been the best player in the country, as well as Toney Douglas and future NBA sharpshooter Jack McClinton, and you had a group of players that were definitely the best collective mix of talent in the country.

Unfortunately for the ACC, next year they will all be gone. This season's collection of conference talent will leave a huge void, be it through graduation or moving on to the NBA.

Recruiting class critical for Pack basketball program

Two images this week served as a reminder that N.C. State faces a sense of urgency when it comes to its men’s basketball program.

The first came Tuesday night, when you could see huge patches of empty seats in the game at the RBC Center against N.C. Central. The official attendance was 10,888, but either there were phenomenally long lines for popcorn or that figure didn’t reflect how many fans were really there.

The second came Wednesday, as State coach Sidney Lowe watched the Word of God at Ravenscroft game – and Holy Rams star John Wall was spectacular.

State is at a critical point in Lowe’s tenure. Brandon Costner took a medical redshirt as a freshman and is now in his third year of eligibility. But he will graduate in May. The fact that he won’t commit to another year of playing, and that Lowe says he hasn’t talked at length yet with Costner about his future, is a strong indication Costner won’t return.

Holliday: Another guy I used to watch on Friday

Oct 6, 2008

Cam Sexton played high school football in North Carolina.

Cam Sexton played high school football in North Carolina.

Cameron Sexton learned his football down on the border. The region that runs from Scotland and Richmond counties north to Cumberland County produces some of the stiffest competition in the entire state. That's the environment where Sexton picked up his first lessons as a quarterback.

Historically, so many players from the North Carolina-South Carolina border leave the state to play college football. Sexton certainly had his opportunities. The first thing Steve Spurrier did after becoming head coach at South Carolina was to head north to Laurinburg to recruit Sexton. Bobby Bowden also paid a visit to the Sexton household. But the Scotland High quarterback chose Chapel Hill, which was a recruiting coup for former UNC coach John Bunting.

Not only was Sexton from a region where players often headed south instead of north, he had become quite an accomplished quarterback as a high school player. The first thing that stood out about Sexton was his footwork. He didn't just
