Southern Durham fends off Riverside charge, 27-24

Durham, N.C. — Southern Durham got a quick start against winless Riverside before it became a game Friday night, but the Spartans were able to hold on in a 27-24 win.
On their first drive, Southern Durham's Trey Lucas found success on the ground, including a 10 yarder to the Riverside 10. From the 1-yard line, Lucas finished the drive with a touchdown.
Two possessions later, the Spartans were on the move again, with William Cameron on a 15-yard run to the 5. Then, Kendall Hinton threw to Jamario Johnson in the endzone corner for another six points and Oscar Ciseneros Diaz added his second extra point making it 14-0.
Then Riverside fought back.
Quarterback Jonathan Deluca on the option roll out pitched to Shalom Williams as he was hit. A big gainer was aided by a personal foul which gave them 15 more yards to the Southern 9.
On the first play of the second period, Shalom finished the drive with a score – but the extra point failed.
Riverside kept it close, but Southern Durham held out, winning 27-24.
Riverside (0-7, 0-3 PAC 6) hosts Hillside next week. Southern Durham (4-4, 3-1 PAC 6) travels to East Chapel Hill.
