Strong 2nd Half leads Cavaliers past Holly Springs 67-54

FINAL Cuthbertson 67 Holly Springs 54: Behind a strong 2nd half from Shelton Mitchell and Isiah Cureton and strong defense, the Cuthbertson Cavaliers were able to overcome a halftime deficit for the second consecutive day and beat the Holly Springs Golden Hawks 67-54. Trailing 40-32 late in the 3rd quarter, Cuthbertson was able to go on a run 13-0 run and never looked back from there. Mitchell had 11 of his game high 18 points in the 2nd half while Cureton dropped in 12 points in the 2nd half to finish with 16 points. Anthony Doyle finished with 14 points for Holly Springs.
END 3Q Cuthbertson 45 Holly Springs 42: Cuthbertson exploded for 21 points in third quarter to help them race out to a 45-42 lead after 3 quarters. After the Cavaliers found themselves down 40-32 against Holly Springs, Cuthbertson went on a 13-2 run to finish the half. The Cavaliers are being led in scoring by Shelton Mitchell and Lucious McMillon who both have 10 points. Anthony Doyle is leading the all scorers with 14 points for Holly Springs.
HALFTIME Holly Springs 30 Cuthbertson 24: The 2nd quarter brought more back and forth action as it appears both teams have shook off the morning rust. Shelton Mitchell for the Cavaliers poured in 5 points in the quarter to keep Cuthbertson close, but it was Anthony Doyle's big 2nd quarter for Holly Springs that stole the show. Doyle, held scoreless in the 1st quarter, had 10 2nd quarter points, including the last 8 for his team to close out the half.
END 1Q Holly Springs 15 Cuthbertson 12: Neither team is playing with much energy it seems early here in the first game of today. The largest lead for either squad has been 5, by Holly Springs on 2 occasions. The Golden Hawks are led early by Craig McDaniel with 5 points while Cuthbertson has been led by Lucious McMillon's 4 points. Holly Springs has done a good job thus far on Shelton Mitchell, holding him to just 2 points.

Holly Springs finds themselves in the peculiar position of playing for 5th place, even though they haven't dropped a contest yet in the Holiday Invitational. The Hawks lost a coin toss for advancement with St Joseph's after the Falcons were not able to be here in time due to inclement weather. The Golden Hawks did not let that disappointing outcome affect their game against Person as they were able to hold off the Rockets in a 69-67 victory. Holly Springs was able to survive the 37 point outburst from Person's Tyrone Outlaw Jr, by placing 4 players in double figures themselves, led by Anthony Doyle's 17 points.
Cuthbertson behind standout point guard Shelton Mitchell's 19 points and Isiah Cureton's 2nd half 10 points were able to take down the Kinston High School Vikings, 50-47, in a rematch of the NCSHAA 2-A State Championship. The story of this game, however, was not offense but defense as the Cavaliers fought back from a 38-24 halftime deficit to take down the Vikings. Cuthbertson was able to hold Kinston scoreless in the 4th quarter of the game to help complete the comeback. Mitchell has scored 49 points in his two games thus far.
