Apex, N.C. — Panther Creek avenged its previous loss to Apex Friendship this season, taking down the Patriots in straight sets, 3-0, in the Peak City Thursday evening.
The Catamounts now own a two-game winning streak after dropping its previous two to Sanderson and Apex Friendship.
“It certainly was a revenge game. However, people need to be aware of Apex Friendship,” said Panther Creek head coach Karen Garmon. “They have a great coach, they have good players and they have a lot of fight. They can beat any team on any given night; they’re no team to take lightly.”
Panther Creek gained momentum from the get-go on Thursday, jumping out to a lead that reached nine points in the first set.
Apex Friendship rallied to make it a three-point deficit at 22-19, but the Catamounts finished the job, taking the set, 25-22.
It was the same result but a different story in the second frame.
Apex Friendship battled back-and-forth with the Catamounts, playing to a 20-20 tie, but it was Panther Creek again that was able to finish down the stretch. Panther Creek finished the second set on a 5-1 run to take its second-straight, 25-21.
The Patriots looked poised to take the third set after jumping out to an early 7-1 lead. Apex Friendship pushed its lead to 14-6 — its largest of the match — but Panther Creek wasn’t dead yet.
Panther Creek stormed back with a 13-5 run to knot the set at 19-19, and then tallied a 6-2 score the rest of the way to take the set and match.
Garmon said the team has focused heavily on mental toughness and finishing this season, which was on full display in the game-winning set Thursday night.
“The ability to come back early in the season, we blew those games every time,” Garmon said. “But now I feel like we’re finally getting to the point where we’re bouncing back, we’re able to come back in a situation like that.
“They feel good right now, and when a team feels good collectively, things can happen.”
Panther Creek (5-4) is slated to visit Apex on Wednesday,, and Apex Friendship (4-4) will travel to Southern Lee Tuesday.
