Panther Creek and Holly Springs' boys basketball teams ended the regular season in a tie for fifth place in the Tri-9 4-A Conference, and on Thursday they will break that tie.
The two teams will meet at 5 p.m. at Cary High School on Thursday evening to break the tie for fifth place.
The winner of Thursday's game will be the last automatic bid to the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
According to the latest HighSchoolOT.com playoff projections, if Panther Creek wins, Holly Springs will receive the wildcard bid to the playoffs in the east. If Holly Springs wins, Sanderson would be the likely wildcard team.
If any non-automatic qualifiers win their respective conference tournament, such as Riverside in the PAC 6, the wildcard race could change.
The semifinals of the Tri-9 conference tournament will be held at Holly Springs on Wednesday. The championships are slated for Friday at Holly Springs.
