Cary, N.C. — Panther Creek earned its first win of the season, taking down previously unbeaten Apex Friendship, 2-1, Monday evening in Cary.
“We knew they [Apex Friendship] were going to be a good team,” said Panther Creek head coach Chad Sichak. “We saw them up at the Heritage scrimmages, so we knew it would be a good challenge and a test for us.
“As long as we play our game, and our style of soccer, we think we can play basically with anybody in the state as long as we play our style of soccer.”
The Catamounts didn’t waste any time finding the scoresheet with a goal from Daniel Mogollon only 42 seconds into the match for the one-goal lead.
Apex Friendship’s Victor Perez nearly knotted the match with a quality chance in the 8th minute inside the box, but the Panther Creek goalie was in position to make a two-handed save.
Noe Varner doubled up the Patriots eight minute later, scoring on a free kick from just outside of the penalty box that found the upper-right corner of the net.
Liam Camilleri nearly added a third goal for Panther Creek in the 63rd minute after a long run, which resulted on a one-on-one opportunity, but the Apex Friendship goalie made a stellar sliding save outside of the box to maintain a two-goal deficit.
“In the first half it could’ve been four or five to nothing if we converted some of the opportunist that we had, even in the first fifteen minutes of the game. That’s what we’ve been trying to get one them, that they need to burry those chances that they have. We can’t let teams in the games when they shouldn’t be in the game with us.”
The would-be back breaker gave the Patriots life, and they cashed in with seven minutes left to play in the match.
Michael Fowler scored on a two-on-one in the 73rd minute, tapping the ball into a wide-open net to give Apex Friendship a chance as time dwindled down.
Despite a flurry in the final seven minutes, the Catamounts held on to snap its losing streak and earn its first victory of the young season.
Panther Creek and Apex Friendship will both return to action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Catamounts will welcome Apex to Cary, and Apex Friendship will host Green Hope.
