Raleigh, N.C. — Northeastern made its trek from Elizabeth City worth the three-hour drive on Saturday, shutting out Southern Durham, 28-0, at the HighSchoolOT Jamboree from Cardinal Gibbons.
The Eagles jumped on the Spartans quickly with a five-yard score from running back Traveon Freshwater on their opening drive of the scrimmage.
Southern Durham stalled Northeastern’s next drive with an interception at its own 45 yard line, but the Spartans handed the ball right back with a fumble on the very next play, which Freshwater recovered while playing defensive end.
Northeastern marched down the field once again toward the end of the first half, starting with a 30-yard gain that set up a 10-yard score on a quarterback keeper from Damar Sutton to put the Eagles up by two scores.
It was deja vu for Northeastern in the second half, scoring on its first drive of the second stanza. JR Walker found pay dirt from 30-yards out with just less than five minutes into the half.
Walker found the end zone 12 minutes later with a pick-6, but the play was called erased by a block in the back on the return.
But the Eagles didn’t take their foot off the gas Saturday afternoon, putting the nail in the coffin with a pitch and catch from Hall to Jahmari Ishman with 38 seconds remaining in the ball game.
Southern Durham will take on A.C. Reynolds, and Northeastern will face D.H. Conley to open its season. Both games are scheduled for Friday with 7:30 p.m. kickoffs.
