In the first overtime game of the 2011 HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational, Joanna Smith's two free throws with 0.4 on the clock led Charlotte Myers Park to a breathtaking 69-68 victory against Cary Green Hope in the semifinals of Mix 101.5 girls' tournament.
Smith, a non-starter for the 12-0 Mustangs, said she was nervous because she'd never been in that situation before.
"All I was thinking was that I needed to knock these free throws down so we can win and play in the championship," Smith said. "We're going to try to win it all tomorrow."
Myers Park trailed 68-67 when Green Hope's Kristen Gaffney had hit two free throws of her own with 4.6 seconds remaining in overtime.
"We talk about composure all the time and attitude and effort," Myers Park coach Dustin Terrel said. "I think that showed a lot how we battled."
Four players finished in double figures for Myers Park, led by Roddreka Rogers' 20 points and 18 rebounds. Aliyah Mazyck had 17 points and Saadia Timpton finished with 13 points. Rogers' sister, Rydeiah, almost had a triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.
Myers Park will face Raleigh Millbrook for the girls' championship at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Green Hope fell to 10-2 with the loss.
"It was a good, hard-fought game," Green Hope coach Mike Robinson said. "We were down pretty much the whole game, fought hard and our girls showed a lot of character. It was one of the toughest games we've been in, physically."
The Falcons were led by 30 points and eight rebounds from Kristen Gaffney and 21 points from Ashley Williams.
