Raleigh native Isaac Copeland decided his Charlottesville, Va., Miller School Mustangs weren't going home early in his team's elimination game against Wilson Greenfield on Friday.
Copeland finished with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (5-3) to a 75-61 win. Miller will now face Apex in the fifth-place game of the Summit Hospitality bracket at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday.
Copeland, a 6-9 junior transfer from Raleigh Ravenscroft who is being recruited nationally, also led the Mustangs with 4 assists in the victory. He said he grew up watching the Holiday Invitational and relished the chance to come home and play in front of his friends and family.
"It's great; I've always dreamed of playing out there on that court," Copeland said, referring to Holliday Gymnasium, the home of the HSOT. "It's just a great feeling."
The Mustangs held a slim 54-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Knights 21-12 in the final period.
"Our guys stepped after a tough loss (in the first round) and got back to the way we play basketball," Miller coach Scott Willard said.
Miller's Guilherme Guimaraes finished with 16 points to aid the Miller effort.
Greenfield (11-4) was eliminated from the HSOT for the second consecutive year. The Knights were led by Xavier Mills' 20 points and Ashley Williams 12.
"I thought we came out today and were a little more focused," Greenfield coach Rob Salter said. "We battled for about 28 minutes and I thought our guys really showed some toughness."
