The N.C. High School Athletic Association released its 2014 mens' and women's lacrosse playoff brackets Tuesday morning.
This year, there will be a men's state championship at the 4-A level and a mens' state championship at the 1-A/2-A/3-A level. Prior to this year, just one state championship encompassed all classifications of North Carolina lacrosse.
The women will still play just one state championship across all classifications.
The opening round of women's and 4-A men's playoffs will begin Wednesday with second-round games on Saturday. The third round takes place Tuesday, May 16 with the fourth round on Friday, May 16.
The regional round will be played May 20 and state championships take place May 23 and 24.
The first round of the men's 4-A bracket is filled with local teams. On the men's side, Green Hope (10-7) will host the wildcard Heritage Huskies (6-8) on Wednesday. Riverside (7-7) will host wildcard Panther Creek (7-10) and Millbrook (9-6) will face Holly Springs (8-8).
Waiting in the second round of the men's bracket, Hoggard will face the winner of Green Hope vs. Heritage on Saturday. Wakefield (9-5) is set to take on New Bern (12-3). Apex (15-2) will play the winner of a match between Laney and New Hanover.
The Middle Creek Mustangs (16-1), who just won their conference for the first time in school history, will face Jordan (9-6) in the second round. Leesville Road (14-1) will host the winner of Riverside vs. Panther Creek and East Chapel Hill (14-3) will host the winner of Millbrook vs. Holly Springs.
Cardinal Gibbons (13-2) is on top of the women's bracket and will play the winner of New Hanover vs. Topsail in the first round. Green Hope (9-5) will face Millbrook (11-4) in the second round.
Also in the second round, the Broughton women (15-2) will host the winner of a first-round game between Middle Creek (4-10) and Leesville Road (4-8).
The Apex Cougars also wait until Saturday to play. They will host the winner of Heritage (8-6) vs. Enloe (5-9).
Carrboro (5-7) meets Panther Creek (5-8) in the first round of the women's bracket with the winner facing Hoggard (16-1) in the second round. Athens Drive and Wakefield round out Saturday's games.
The first round of 1-A/2-A/3-A games begins Saturday with the second round Tuesday, May 13.
In the men's 1-A/2-A/3-A bracket, Cardinal Gibbons highlights the field and could possibly face a conference rematch in next Tuesday's second round. The Crusaders play the winner of Cedar Ridge and Roxboro Community School.
Chapel Hill and Carrboro are also among the teams playing in the men's 1-A/2-A/3-A bracket.
