Laurinburg, N.C. — Mallard Creek jumped out to an early lead against Scotland County, then held on in the second half to claim a 28-21 win in the season opener in Laurinburg on Thursday night.
Jadyn Washington and Lovelle Williams were the key duo for the Mavericks all night. After the Mallard Creek defense intercepted a Scotland pass, Washington connected with Williams on a 30-yard touchdown pass to put the Mavs up 7-0 in the first quarter.
They weren’t done.
Scotland turned the ball over on downs on the Mallard Creek 17-yard line, then the Mavericks marched down the field, capping off the drive with a Cameron Lowery one-yard touchdown run. Mallard Creek led 14-0.
Just before halftime, Washington and Williams found each other again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown to give Mallard Creek a 21-0 lead at halftime.
That’s when Scotland’s attempt at a comeback got underway. Mallard Creek punted the ball away to Scotland. A few plays later, Zamir White, a Georgia recruit, caught a short pass and did the rest with his feet, getting into the end zone for the first time of the night. Mallard Creek still led 21-7.
Still trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, Scotland looked to White again. The senior broke an 89-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to a single score, 21-14.
But with just over two minutes left, Mallard Creek delivered the dagger. Lowery ended a long drive with a one-yard touchdown run, giving Mallard Creek a 28-14 lead.
Warren Bell completed a 38-yard pass to White for another Scotland touchdown with less than a minute left, but the Scots couldn’t recover the onside kick as Mallard Creek ran out the time and secured the week one win.
Scotland County returns to play on Aug. 25 with a road game at Hillside, while Mallard Creek will host Butler. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
