Holiday Invitational

Maker leads Carlisle to Summit Bracket title over Trinity

Posted December 28, 2013

Carlisle (VA) sophomore Thon Maker put on a big time performance on Saturday night in the Summit Hospitality Bracket of the Holiday Invitational, and that performance helped the Chiefs to a 72-66 win over Trinity.

The win is Carlisle's first Holiday Invitational championship in school history, but it took until the final minute for the game to be decided.

It was a game of runs. After Maker was tagged with a technical foul before the game started for dunking in warm-ups, Trinity jumped out to an 8-2 lead.

Carlisle tied the game at 11-11, and led 16-13 after the first quarter.

Trinity played catch-up for much of the remainder of the game, trailing 32-27 at halftime.

In the second half, Trinity kept fighting back. The Crusaders tied the game briefly, but never retook the lead.

In the final minute, Trinity got within one point, but came up empty on a possession that would have tied the game.

Maker was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He finished the championship game with 34 points and nine rebounds.

Kaleb Johnson was also named to the all-tournament team. In the championship game, Johnson scored 21 points and brought in nine rebounds of his own.

Trinity was led by Dennis Smith's 17 points. The Crusaders also got 12 points from Alonzo Tyson. Both Smith and Tyson were named to the all-tournament team.

Lee Moore and Nykwaun Lucas posted 11 points each for Trinity.
