Former South Johnston football coach Joe Salas has been named the next head football coach at Lumberton, according to a report in The Robesonian newspaper.
According to the report, Salas' hiring was approved by the Board of Education on Tuesday night.
Salas spent seven seasons at South Johnston from 2004 until 2010, compiling at 45-41 record. In 2009, Salas helped South Johnston to a 14-2 record and a trip to the 3-AA state championship game. The Trojans lost to South Point in the championship, 42-28.
Prior to the 2011 season, Johnston County Schools and the N.C. High School Athletic Association looked into allegations that South Johnston held summer practices where illegal body-to-body contact took place. Salas did not return to South Johnston for the 2011 season and headed to Red Springs High School as an assistant.
Last season, Salas was the coach at West Bladen High School where the team went 0-11.
Lumberton posted a 5-6 record last season, including a 1-4 record in the Southeastern 4-A Conference. The Pirates lost to Jack Britt in the opening round of the 4-AA state playoffs.
