Tarboro, the defending 2-A high school football champs took another step Friday toward the 2012 title with a 48-14 win over Kinston.
The Vikings led 12-7 at the half.
Kinston started out the third quarter with an on-side kick attempt only to see it go horribly wrong. Travonne Marshall picked up the ball for the Vikings and ran it all the way for the touchdown. With the two-point conversion, Tarboro led 20-7.
On Kinston's next possession, QB Vequain Joyner looked to pass left and saw it picked off by Tarboro's Radja Bobbitt.
The Vikings would convert, on the handoff to the right for Bobbitt, and tack on another two to lead 28-7.
Kinston was not ready to give up, though.
Joyner, at his own 4-yard line, passed right on a fade to Denzel Keyes. Keyes would pull down the jump ball in the end zone to cut it to 28-14.
But that's as close as Kinston would get.
Tarboro has three-seed Northeastern in the next round.
