Rahim Winston, Jr., a running back at Jordan High School in Durham, has verbally committed to Chowan University in Murfreesboro, according to his father.
Winston stands at 5-foot-5 and and 161 pounds. He was named to the PAC 6 all-conference team this past season.
During football season, Winston was awarded Tom Suiter's Extra Effort Award, recognizing him for his accomplishments on and off the field, including his work in the classroom.
"He's a really tough kid. I've seen him take a couple of hard hits and pop right back up," Jordan Head Football Coach LaDwaun Harrison said during the Extra Effort Award presentation. "I will match his heart against anybody's ... He is that competitive and that focused on being better."
Winston said his size makes people underestimate him.
"I surprise a lot of people," said Winston. "They are like 'how are you going to let this little kid run up on us' and stuff like that. I just shake it off and I just keep playing. My approach to the game is never give up. I'd say I have enough heart to do what I need to do."
Jordan completed the season with a 1-10 overall record.
