Heritage athlete Jeff Gemmell made a verbal commitment to play college football at UNC-Charlotte on Monday afternoon, according to Heritage Husky head coach Jason McGeorge.
Gemmell, a 6-foot-3, 216-pound rising senior will play linebacker for the 49ers. He had received interest from other schools as a defensive end and a tight end as well, and will continue to play various positions for Heritage during his upcoming senior season.
"He went to the prospect camp on Friday," McGeorge said. "After camp was completed, Coach Adams called him and offered him a scholarship. He thought about it over the weekend and just felt very comfortable with the staff and program.
"He is very excited and relieved to have this process completed before his senior season."
Gemmell also had offers from Army, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb.
During his junior season, Gemmell recorded 90 tackles and nine sacks on the defensive line on his way to being named to the 4-A Cap-8 All-Conference team.
In 2013, the Heritage Huskies played to a 6-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Cap-8. The team lost in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs to Scotland.
