Heritage's Baker commits to Elon

A week after Heritage defensive player Jeff Gemmell announced his commitment to UNC-Charlotte, the Huskies have another football player who will play at the next level.
Matt Baker, a linebacker and running back at Heritage High, verbally committed to Elon University on Wednesday, according to Heritage head coach Jason McGeorge.
Baker was offered by Elon on June 20.
"Matt ran very well while we were at Elon's Team Camp," McGeorge said. "He is a very athletic, explosive player. Matt is very excited about his opportunity at Elon and is looking forward to his senior season."
Elon offered the 6-foot, 208-pound rising senior as a linebacker. During his junior year, Baker recorded 85 tackles, three sacks, 15 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and one interception.
On offense, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and scored three times, with two touchdowns in the team's season-ending loss to Scotland in the first round of the state playoffs.
As a team, Baker and Heritage played to a 6-6 overall record in 2013 and a 3-4 mark in the 4-A Cap-8 Conference.
Heritage begins its fourth varsity football season Aug. 22 on the road against Holly Springs.
