Raleigh, N.C. — New Hanover defeated Heritage, 10-3, Saturday afternoon in Raleigh at the HighSchoolOT Jamboree from Cardinal Gibbons.
The Wildcats got on the board first 17 minutes into the first half with a 15-yard run from Mikai Stanley on New Hanover’s second drive of the contest.
New Hanover had ample chances to pad it’s lead in the opening frame, but Blake Watson just missed on two passes from 30-plus yards to outstretched receivers.
Watson did later hit Cole Tanner from nine yards out, but the senior wideout dropped the ball in the endzone.
New Hanover added to its lead with a 21-yard field goal as time expired to end the first half.
The Wildcasts continued to move the ball with ease in the second half, but Heritage’s Jaedon Williams saved the Huskies from a three-score deficit after stripping Meegan Canty one yard short of the endzone.
Following the touchback, Heritage traveled 47 yards to set up a 33-yard field goal, but place kicker Ben Steele missed wide left with 7:45 remaining in the contest.
Led by reserve quarterback Walker Harris late in the ballgame, Heritage marched to the New Hanover 1-yard line, but the Huskies weren’t able to punch it in.
The Wildcats stuffed two straight run attempts, and on third down Heritage lost -19 yards with a ball that was snapped over Harris’ head.
Steele split the uprights from 33-yards out with 51 seconds remaining, but with only one timeout per half in the HSOT Jamboree format, it was too little too late for Heritage.
The Huskies were without the services of star linebacker Drake Thomas Saturday afternoon.
Heritage kicks its season off on Friday at 7 p.m. against Panther Creek. New Hanover will travel to J.H. Rose on Friday fora 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
