Hampton survives Cuthbertson in overtime thriller

The first overtime game of the 2012 HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational included the best comeback.
Hampton, Va., led by 20 points at one point in its Summit Hospitality bracket quarterfinal with Waxhaw Cuthbertson before the Cavaliers forced overtime. However, the Crabbers held on in the extra period to win, 61-59, and advance to the semifinals of the Summit bracket.
It didn't come easy for Hampton and its star, N.C. State recruit Anthony "Cat" Barber. The Crabbers led by six in the extra period but Cuthbertson's Emmitt Afam stole the ball with 1.5 seconds remaining and was able to get off a shot that came up short.
Barber led the Crabbers with 26 points; Tre Perry added 6 points and 13 rebounds for Hampton, which will play DeSoto, Texas at 7:20 p.m., Friday in the Summit semifinal at Raleigh Broughton High School's venerable Holliday Gymnasium.
"We made stops when we needed to make stops and we pulled it out in the end," said Hampton coach Walter Brower Sr.
Cuthbertson was led by Shelton Mitchell's 30 points; Luciius McMillon and Isiah Cureton scored 9 points each for the Cavaliers.
"What our team needed was to play some high-level competition, be pushed and maybe exposed in some ways so we it could help us improve," said Cavaliers coach Mike Helms. "We still see that we have a lot of work to do."
Cuthbertson will face Kinston at 2:20 p.m. Friday in a rematch of the 2012 NCHSAA 2A state championship game.
