Apex, N.C. — Green Hope's volleyball team handed rival Apex its first loss of the season in convincing fashion on Thursday night.
The Falcons swept the Cougars 25-13, 25-16, 25-20, rallying in the third set to secure the win.
With its back against the wall, Apex came out motivated in the third set. Green Hope didn't hold its first lead in the set until it was 6-5, but Apex quickly stormed back.
The Cougars built a three-point lead over Green Hope on multiple occasions, including 17-14, but the Falcons rallied from that point, scoring the next five points to take a 19-17 lead. A kill by Erin Boone gave Green Hope an 18-17 lead, a lead the Falcons would not lose.
Green Hope finished the third set on an 11-3 run to secure the sweep.
The Falcons were more dominant in the first two sets. Green Hope fell behind 3-2 in the first set before it went on a 13-3 run to take a 15-6 lead. The Falcons finished off the set with a 25-13 win.
Green Hope scored the first five points of the second set, the fifth one on a kill from Kayla Dowler. Apex came back to cut the Falcons' lead to one point, but Green Hope next trailed.
Dowler got the final kill in the second set to give Green Hope a 25-16 win in the set.
Green Hope is now 5-1 overall, with the lone loss coming to North Raleigh Christian Academy in the Best of North Carolina Invitational. The Falcons will host Chapel Hill on Friday night as non-conference play continues.
The loss was the first of the season for Apex, which is now 3-1 on the season. The Cougars return to action on Aug. 29 at Broughton.
