Green Hope High School quarterback Chris Tutwiler suffered a broken leg in a scrimmage against Millbrook on Saturday at the HighSchoolOT.com Jamboree.
According to Tutwiler's father, Tony, the 6-foot senior suffered a compound leg fracture and underwent surgery on Saturday evening. Late Saturday, Tutwiler was out of surgery and recovering.
Tutwiler went down on the field during the first half of Saturday's scrimmage. After sports medicine staff treated him on the field, Tutwiler was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Before leaving the field on a stretcher, Tutwiler's teammates all gathered at midfield to speak to him.
Green Hope football coach Kwame Dixon said the Falcons "learned a valuable lesson today in mental toughness."
The injury to Tutwiler means Green Hope has to find a new starting quarterback going into the first week of the season.
Last year, Tutwiler completed 211-of-353 passes for 2,478 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also ran for four touchdowns.
Green Hope put Luke Massei in at quarterback after Tutwiler's injury. Massei, a junior, finished 5-for-16 for 56 yards with an interception.
“Chris knew everything, he knew the offense,” Dixon said. “Now we have a young guy and we have to move on from there.”
Green Hope completed a 6-6 season last year behind Tutwiler at quarterback. The Falcons made the state playoffs last season for the first time since 2004.
The Falcons will open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 23, at Cardinal Gibbons. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
