Gibbons scores six unanswered goals to down Fuquay-Varina

Raleigh, N.C. — Cardinal Gibbons trailed Fuquay-Varina at halftime, but the Crusaders scored six unanswered goals in the second half to claim the third round playoff victory, 6-1.
After much of the first half went scoreless, Fuquay-Varina scored the first goal of the game in the 31st minute as Kaitlyn Laux found the net on an assist from Josey Wilson.
The Bengals took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
It didn't take long for Cardinal Gibbons to respond in the second half though. The Crusaders scored three goals in five minutes to take control of the game.
The first goal for Cardinal Gibbons came in the 45th minute, five minutes into the second half, from Taylor Currie. Two minutes later, in the 47th minute, Haley Garrett gave the Crusaders its first lead of the game at 2-1. The third goal came in the 49th minute on a shot by Meghan Kast.
By that point, Cardinal Gibbons was on a roll. Maddie Reid, Garrett and Audrey Smith all added goals in the second half as the Crusaders cruised to the win.
No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons will take on No. 17 Middle Creek in the fourth round of the state playoffs later this week. The date and time for the game have not yet been set.
