Gibbons remains unbeaten, beats Leesville in Cap 7 opener

Raleigh, N.C. — Tropical Storm Irma could not stop Monday's Cap 7 Conference boys soccer match-up between Cardinal Gibbons and Leesville Road, and despite a a light rain at times, nothing was going to stop the unbeaten Crusaders.
Cardinal Gibbons exploded in the second half to defeat Leesville Road 5-0, winning its sixth game of the season and opening conference play with a win.
Jack Zarnik got the scoring started for the Crusaders in the 16th minute, scoring off a rebound to give Cardinal Gibbons a 1-0 lead.
That one-goal lead held through the first half and Cardinal Gibbons went into the halftime break with that advantage.
Things heated up in the second half though.
Jackson Hollenbach scored on a header in the second half off a corner kick from Sal Bottone, pushing the Cardinal Gibbons lead to 2-0.
Kevin Kelleher made the Cardinal Gibbons lead a three-goal lead when he knocked a loose ball into the net, then a Leesville Road own-goal made it 4-0.
The final goal of the game came in the final minutes as John Throdsen scored on a shot from 25 yards out to give the Crusaders a 5-0 lead.
Cardinal Gibbons' win gives the Crusaders a 6-0-1 record. Gibbons has yet to lose a game, and the only tie came against New Hanover in August. Cardinal Gibbons will return to play on Sept. 13 with a home game against Knightdale at 6 p.m.
Leesville Road falls to 2-5-2 with the loss to Cardinal Gibbons and will host Sanderson on Sept. 13 as conference play continues. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
