Posted February 17
Buies Creek, N.C. — Garner and Knightdale were in a tight game at halftime, but the Trojans held Knightdale to just 23 points in the second half en route to a 79-50 win in the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament championship.
Garner jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter. Demetric Horton scored nine points off a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter and Trayvon Ferrell posted eight points in the quarter as Garner took a 26-17 lead.
Xavier Fennell kept the Knights in the game early, scoring nine points of his own in the first quarter.
But Garner went cold from the field in the second quarter. Kenyon Burt and Marque Maultsby scored all six of Garner's second quarter points, and that allowed Knightdale to cut into the lead.
Knightdale outscored Garner 10-6 in the quarter and the Trojans led 32-27 at the break.
Garner's offense caught fire in the second half. Alex Reed, who was held to just six points in the first half, scored 13 points in the third quarter alone as Garner outscored Knightdale 27-12 in the quarter to go up 59-39 going into the final eight minutes.
Burt helped to build on that lead in the fourth quarter for the Trojans. The junior scored nine points in the fourth quarter as Garner pulled away for the 29-point win.
Reed led the Trojans in scoring with 23 points. Burt posted 20 points for Garner, Ferrell had 13 points and Horton scored 12 points.
Knightdale was led by Fennell's 12 points – the only Knight in double-figures for the game.
Garner, which was also the regular season champion in the Greater Neuse River Conference, will be among the top seeds in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs when the brackets are released on Saturday. Knightdale will also qualify for the state playoffs.
