Garner will be trying to join some elite company following its first-round rout of Goldsboro in the opening game of the 2012 HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
The Trojans (8-1) had little difficulty in its 71-42 win against Goldsboro (5-5) in the first game of the four-team tournament of the HSOT. With the victory, Garner -- which won an eight-team Holiday Invitational last season -- could become one of the few teams in the HSOT's 41-year history to win back-to-back titles.
Garner will face the winner of the Raleigh Leesville Road-Greensboro Dudley for the four-team championship at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday.
"This has always been a highlight of our Christmas break," Garner coach Eddie Gray said. "The kids really look forward to it and we really appreciate all the sponsors and all the people who put this on."
Garner, in its 18th appearance at the HSOT, jumped out to a 9-0 lead against the 1A Cougars and didn't look back. The Trojans led 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, 47-21 at halftime and 65-29 at the end of three quarters. They were led by 13 points from Demarcus Sanford and 12 from Julius Barnes.
Goldsboro, in its fourth HSOT appearance, was led by 13 points from Lonzia Tyson.
"We ran into a buzzsaw out here tonight," said first-year Cougars coach Russell Stephens. "Garner is a very good team. We had some turnovers in the backcourt that really cost us. They're the best team we've seen all year and they'll probably be the best team we'll see the rest of the year."
