A former Asheville high school football star was shot and killed after police say he was involved in a break-in and fired a gun as officers chased him.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports ( ) former Reynolds High School football star A.J. Marion was shot Sunday morning after being struck by a single bullet. Police said Marion died at Mission Hospital.

Sgt. Dave Romick said officers responding to a burglary call chased the suspect. Romick said officers saw the suspect had a gun, and when they confronted him, he refused to comply with commands from police and was shot.

The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a probe and the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

As a sophomore, Marion helped lead Reynolds High School to the 2009 state championship. He rushed for 1,815 yards and 24 touchdowns in his junior year and was offered a scholarship by East Carolina that season. But a serious knee injury in his senior year derailed his season and his college plans.
