A week removed from only a few carries in a Leesville win over Broughton, Braxton Berrios seemed to have the freshest legs of anyone at Marshall Hamilton Field in Raleigh Friday night.
Things started off bad, and didn’t get much better for the Wolverines from Wakefield, as the opening kickoff was returned to just the 2 yard line. A three and out by the Wakefield offense, and a shanked punt set up Leesville’s first drive in the Wakefield red zone. Three plays later, Braxton Berrios took the end around into the end zone from 17 yards out to give Leesville the early 7-0 advantage. After an 80-yard touchdown pass from Connor Mitch to Chris Ballen was called back due to holding, the Wolverines turned it over seven plays later.
Following the Wakefield turnover, Braxton Berrios scampered 44 yards for his second score of the game with 5:58 remaining in the 1st quarter. The next Wakefield drive would end after the Wolverines attempted a fake punt that came up short. With the short field in front of them, the Pride turned to the man of the evening Braxton Berrios from 5 yards out to make it 21-0.
The 21-0 Leesville lead held until the end of the 1st quarter, which also triggered the beginning of a lengthy lightning delay. The 2nd quarter began just after 9 o’clock, and with 6:12 to go before half Berrios took it around the right side for 55 yards and his 4th touchdown of the evening. Wakefield then used a 17-yard Connor Mitch touchdown pass to Jordan Fielleteau, and a safety to cut the Pride lead to 28-9. Wakefield was unable to capitalize on a late 2nd quarter possession, and allowed Leesville to get the ball back with just under a minute remaining before half. The Pride then used a 40-yard, 3rd down reverse pass by Braxton Berrios to Deraja Robinson to get the Pride in the red zone. Berrios then took it in for his 5th, and final score of the night from 13 yards out to give the Pride a 35-9 halftime advantage.
Any chance of a Wakefield 2nd half comeback was thwarted, as the Pride used a 14 play, 9 minute drive to extend the lead to 38-9 on a 21-yard Thomas Nycz field goal. The 2nd half scoring for Wakefield featured a pair of Connor Mitch touchdown passes, but was not nearly enough. Leesville matched the Wakefield 2nd half scoring with runs of 29 and 44 by Kamir Bowen, and Evan Parker respectively. Parker’s 44-yard run was the final blow in the 52-24 Cap-8 win for the Pride.
The win moves Leesville to 6-0, and 3-0 in the Cap-8. The Pride will travel to Sanderson next Friday night. Wakefield drops to 6-1 on the year, and 3-1 in the Cap-8. The Wolverines will host Cap-8 co-leader Wake Forest-Rolesville next Friday night in another Cap-8 contest.
