Southern Durham picked up the Spartans’ first conference win, topping Person 36-7 Friday.

The Rockets scored first on Southern, thanks in part to a fake punt. Quarterback Jashawn King-Barnette lined up in punt formation, and passed complete to Leron Cash at the Spartan 20. Two plays later, King-Barnette found Cash in the end zone for a touchdown.

Southern answered with a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by Maurice Trowell for a touchdown, then took the lead for good on a Kendall Hinton touchdown pass to Derrick Mason.

The Spartans improve to 2-4 overall, and 1-1 in the PAC-6. Person drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
