Millbrook and Panther Creek can each take solace in the fact that Saturday’s scrimmage at the HighSchoolOT.com Jamboree did not count. The teams combined for 14 penalties, seven three-and-outs and went 3-for-16 on third down as the only score came on a fumble in the endzone.
Panther Creek was able to move the ball into Millbrook territory four times on four plays of over 25 yards, but were not rewarded for the feat on any of the occasions. Three of the four trips were thwarted by sacks and a fourth was crippled by a delay of game penalty on third down.
“A lot of good defense, their defense was up to the task,” said Panther Creek head coach Sean Crocker. “It’s early in the season. Guys need to get used to the officials. It’s the first time we have seen officials this year.”
The lone points of the game came early in the second half on a bad snap over the head of the Millbrook quarterback on a third-and-long play from the 7-yard line. The ball bounced into the endzone where it was recovered by Panther Creek.
With each team using rotations of players in the preseason contest, continuity was hard to come by. Millbrook picked up four first downs on their opening drive but failed to cross the chains the rest of the scrimmage.
“We have to get better up front,” said Millbrook head coach Clarence Inscore. “We made a lot of mistakes and need to get a lot better than that.”
