Big plays highlighted the third scrimmage of the day at the HighSchoolOT.com Jamboree as Southern Durham and Garner combined for seven plays of more than 30 yards including three touchdowns that covered more than 50 yards.
Garner outscored Southern Durham in the 32-minute session, 27-20, giving the East teams a 47-46 lead on the day overall through three scrimmages.
Garner running back Nyheim Miller-Hines opened the scoring for the Trojans as he busted loose for a 53-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Vincent Jeffries connected twice with wide receiver Amanini Laneir for scores. The first score came on a fade route to the corner from 17 yards out just before halftime, the second on a 32-yard pitch-and-catch on a perfectly placed ball in-stride down the left sideline.
Southern Durham quarterback Kendall Hinton connected for three passes of at least 50 yards, two of them for touchdowns. Derrick Mason was able to get behind the Garner secondary in the first half as he hauled in a deep ball and coasted the rest of the way for a 52-yard tally. Mason later made a juggling catch along the sidelines that set up a 1-yard Hinton sneak.
Mason finished with four catches for 109 yards. Hinton was 8-for-16 for 240 yards. Southern Durham’s Mario Johnson also caught a 56-yard touchdown.
