Clayton (4A/Greater Neuse River 0-1) falls to the 2010 Champion of the Carolina 6 Cardinal Gibbons in their season opener.
In the first quarter, Gibbons was at their own 48 as John Burton threw deep leftside, he found Steven Boyle for a 52 yard touchdown pass play. The Crusaders took the early 7-0 lead.
Late in the first, Gibbons was at the Comet 42 and Burton looked to pass, this time to Tim Nalesnick. Nalesnick takes it to the Clayton 14 yard line before the Comets force him out of bounds.
On the next play, the Crusaders opt for a sweep to Benjamin Grazen. Grazen goes right and dives in for the touchdown. Gibbons increases the lead to 14-0.
The Comets do get on the board later, but Gibbons takes the win 40-26.
Clayton is now 0-1 with an away game coming up on Aug. 26 against Fuquay-Varina (4A/Tri 9 1-0).
Cardinal Gibbons is now 1-0 with a home game coming up on Aug. 26 against Cary (4A/Tri 9 1-0).
