Well I just not so long ago found out one of the reasons the DL looked a little lighter in the first scrimmage a potential starter transferred to a school in Martin County the Spivey kid. That's a big loss.

@db I agree southern is a .500 team, a good season for us would be 2nd rd of the playoffs. This nonconference schedule will have them well prepared for big 8 play. This kinda reminds me of that 2012 schedule when they had Dudley, middle creek and jack Britt on the schedule

@DBC Benjamin started and he and SD moved the ball on Dudley during that first drive prior to penalties that backed them up.

@ Pride666 That Jordan QB pretty solid. He stays healthy Jordan will win at least 6 or 7.

The Benjamin kid was there JV QB when he was a Frosh, went to Millbrook, not sure about his playing time there. He has progressed each year but lacks some weight....kid from Jordan is legit, pure pocket passer that can move a lil bit...him and Northern QB are alike just Miller has more PT at varsity level. Think Jordan will play with a different mentality under new staff, Hate they moved to another conf though.

@pick 6 I was wrong about who threw the td
pass in the scrimmage it wasn't the Davie Conkid it was the other JR the Benjamin kid. He had some good runs as well.

@pick 6 BIG TIME. Losing 29 seniors is a massive loss any way you slice it I'm just being honest. The only hope I have in Southern finishing over 500 this season is if I hey can somehow go up to the mountains and upset one of the favorites in 3AA AC Reynolds. That would be a huge huge win for this young team.

@db what's your prediction on southern record this season?

@Justdoit- I agree with your assessment. I thought 71st execution was the sharpest. Dudley's Qb play was not good yesterday, perhaps the QB I kept hearing about didn't dress out...

@DBC- I was looking forward to seeing Heritage as well. They got a LB that's high level FBS D-1 recruit. I was told that he's bigger than any LB UNC has on their current roster.

I got a chance to see these scrimmages and I can say this 71st online is huge except for one kid they look 6ft 300 across the board and them big boys are pulling with a purpose. I was also glad to see who I think was Reggie Bryant from last year. He was not wearing 21 but you could tell by the lack of plays he ran and the targets he got when he was in there. I was also surprised by some tall kid at receiver. He made a couple tough catches. But where the rubber meets the road was the backs. I don't remember either one of these guys from last year and they are smaller but they run tough and are quick. By far I think 71st played the best.

Dudley was huge across the board and is still very talented but not as good as last year. With that being said I think they were holding back. They had some studs not dressed out walking the sideline so who knows.

Southern will be OK. I know from past post guys thought it would be a down year but in think coach rob got enough to make some noise.

That's great news. I wouldn't be surprised to see the D lead the team this year.

It's nothing but love when a Coach Bill Hayes (NCA&T) disciple in Coach Davis and a Pro Football Hall of Fame OL, Coach Larry Little (NCCU) disciple in Robinson come together, LOL.

@Pick 6 I did see in the second scrimmage against Dudley the DC rotate in several lineman that was good to see. Also I two kids at the LB positions rotated in #36 and #25 or #15 can't quite remember the numbers but they looked solid had decent size as well. Lots of rotating in bodies in the second scrimmage from what I saw trying to see what pieces fit. Props to both schools agreeing to get in the extra reps and the class between the two you can tell they both have a lot of respect for each other.

Whoever #24 was started. Looked like the freshman to me. Hopefully someone can correct me if i'm wrong. Because #6 is the Davie County kid I believe.

Another I noticed, the defensive kids seemed extremely disciplined too... I liked everything I saw about the defense, and think they got a chance to be really good by November. I couldn't tell how deep they were across their line, but that will be a factor as well.

Jumping to the other side of the ball, they have several RB's that looked really good. During that first scrimmage against Dudley one of the young kids had a very nice run up the middle. kid hit the hole and burst into the second and third level. I thought that the O-line did pretty good job against Dudley as well. i think SD will grow a lot in the month of September. Looking forward to seeing what they look like in October. Should be fun.

@pick 6 you are right about the D they reminded me of the Pony Excess 30 for 30 when SMU fielded their first team after they came back from the post season bans lol! When that being said what they lack in size man they have the chance big time to make up for it with all the speed they have and the DB's look early like they don't mind laying some hits. The D reminds me of Coach Jones early Southern squads when he was there undersized but plenty of speed and aggression. Their problem will come agta team that not only can hang with them with speed and athleticism but also has the size and strength to go along with it those teams will give Southern 's D problems. You said the freshman kid started that must have been the first Dudley scrimmage because what I saw was the Davie Transfer getting the bulk of the reps.

They were bland as all get out. Which was by design since they play SD on September 8th. Big and physical on offense. Smaller and fast on defense. Held their own against Dudley and impressed me to the point that I think they're going to give SC all they can handle, if SC doesn't become more balanced on offense.

@DBC I agree, SD defense is probably the smallest i've seen in years. However I was impressed with how they attacked and got multiple hats to the ball. They did a great job finishing tackles too. That big 6'4 WR for Dudley holds 15 offers but he's going to be sore in the morning. SD kids laid wood on him i believe twice and caused him to fumble both times. Dudley had a couple of jail break runs, that RB #1 for Dudley is special. He was special in that state championship game against Cape Fear. Multiple FBS and FCS D-1 offers. Decided to commit to Howard for educational reasons, not football. At 6'3 210 he's bigger than 9 out of 11 SD defenders, lol.

@Pick 6 I'm not sure if that was the freshman or not but based on his size and speed I think it was him. Number 8 was the Davie Co Transfer. He is a big kid. If that #76 for Jordan can hold on to the ball he will do damage. Man it pains me to give Jordan props I despise them more than any team but out of respect to Coach Barbour I have to be fair. Also you can tell the Southern kids knew Jordan's plays on offense it was so obvious Coach Creecy hasn't changed much lol

Spot on DBC, I agree with all you said.....

Coach Barbour is doing a great job of growing Jordan's program. He's gained miles each year. That Jordan/Hillside school district has talent and Hillside don't have enough jerseys to keep it all. Did you see the wheels on #2? # 76 WR too (yes , there was a WR wearing 76, lol) . If that Qb can stay healthy Jordan is going to have a good year.

Also, who is #24 QB for SD? I thought he was the freshman...

(Cont from previous post) followed by Southern and Dudley they looked to both have around 40-45 dressed out Southern maybe had a couple more not by much then Jordan. Didn't see any of the JV kids though and when I arrived the Southern JV kids were already done they all had their pads off. All in all good reps for the kids and a great atmosphere. Looking forward to seeing Southern in the highschoolot Jamboree Saturday.

( Cont from previous post) they were deep and had size and speed across the board. Before the impromptu Southern Dudley second scrimmage the best looking team overall based on the limited plays I saw was Jordan can't deny it. Not surprised though my old Coach Coach Barbour is a known program builder. This is based on what I saw against Dudley. Again though Each team had advantages due to the rest periods each team I believe had to play back to back scrimmages while the other team rested. Now onto Southern man I can't deny it this is as small of a squad I've seen from them in a while it was very noticeable when they were lining up to shake hands with Dudley especially on defense. Speed though is definitely not lacking if their offensive skill guys have space they will do damage. The interior D needs work but sideline to sideline they held their own. Dudley clearly got the best of them though in the second scrimmage. Based on Varsity numbers 71st had the most followed (Cont next post)

(Cont from previous post) as well as a series each from what looked like the 30 or 35 yard line. After
A few plays Southern scored on a slant pass and I think the Jr QB also scored on a short run I could be wrong. After that though Dudley pretty much owned the goal line situations their running game basically overpowered Southern's. Dudley scored like 3 or 4 times in the goal line series and Scored from the 35 yard line. You could clearly see the size and talent difference afterwards although they were rested and Southern just finished scrimmaging Jordan. Still though Dudley clearly was better. All in all a good scrimmage couldn't take too much away from it because the offenses were very bland and each squad only were able to run about 10-15 plays a series. Based on what I saw overall talent wise it is clearly Dudley man they look like a junior college/ D2 squad out there with all D 1 looking skill guys and DB's plus several lineman. Depth wise 71st hands down and ( cont next post)

(Cont from previous post) in which the Dudley defenders absolutely layed the wood on them I can't deny it Jordan held their own big time. They have some good looking skill guys but need to work on catching the ball they dropped a few open passes. Jordan D held Dudley offense in check for the most part. Neither team scored in the scrimmage. The last official scrimmage was Southern vs Jordan. Again defense was the ahead of the offense on both sides. Neither team scored and both got good pressure on the QB's. The thing I noticed about Southern that is very obvious is as a whole the defense is doing to be undersized big time this year. Offense at the skilled positions they have a lot of speed and the offensive line is huge. The Davie QB is a big boy who has a arm but needs to work on his downfield passing. Neither team scored in that scrimmage. After the Jamboree ended Dudley and Southern decided to scrimmage again focusing on goal line offense and defense (cont on next post)

If they are bigger than SC and Southview that will be scary. Other than MC SC and Southview are massive. I would argue 6 ft 3 280 on average for both.If 71st is in that class that is impressive.

Just got back home from the scrimmage. Great crowd tonight. I got there around 7:20 or so just in time to see some of the Dudley vs 71st scrimmage. I was standing at the fence hollared at Coach D Rob briefly he was very energetic and relaxed. Talked to one of the Southern administrators how did they fair against Dudley and he stated that both teams offense struggled some. Dudley had some nice runs but turned the Ball over some. Says Dudley D was really good and gave the Davie Co kid a couple of good licks. Based on what I heard neither team scored in that scrimmage. From the little I saw from the Dudley vs 71st scrimmage both teams are very physical and will run the ball a lot. 71st man they by far had the most players on the field they were deep both JV and Varsity. Dudley is HUGE! Their starting DB's looked to be bigger than several of Southern's D lineman and I'm not joking. Saw the full Dudley Jordan scrimmage and minus the first two plays on offense for Jordan (cont next post)

I've been paying attention to 71st for the last 4 years, especially since they've came to Durham for scrimmages or either played a Durham team in the playoffs over that stretch . This year's O-line is the biggest line they've had from tackle to tackle.

    Continued from last.

    4. Dudley's passing game has miles to go. But if they get there they have skill kids for days. But if Zeek stay healthy they probably won't need the passing game to run through the west.

    5. The coaching staffs should be commended for their off-season strength and conditioning programs. 0 injuries, and all lines held their own.

So did 71st go against dudley? How did the 71st qb look his uncle is one of my best friends? I agree on 71st I think they will beat RC and Pinecrest with SC being the game of the year in the conference.

  • Pick 6 Aug 9, 10:14 p.m.

First of all, there's not much that can be taken away from a pre-season scrimmage other than the physicality. However, physicality does provide a good indicator of how a team will fare later on.

    1. Most impressive team--- Jordan-- Why-- they are miles better than what they were last year. They had two kids that are on par with the Dudley D-1 kids as far as speed and athleticism, especially #2. They have a very solid QB. I would not be surprised to see them win at least 7 games. Playoff team for sure.

    2. Don't anoint Scotland as conference champs yet...... 71st has a big offensive line with a physical running game. There was not much difference in physicality between their lines and Dudley's. I really think that conference will come down to 71st and Scotland.

    3. Southern Durham will be alright this season. I really liked how they looked against Dudley. Looked like they started the freshman at QB. Somebody correct if i'm wrong. If so, he reminds me of Kendall when Kendall was 14.
