I am impressed with the evolution of Orange football. If the highlights I have watched are truly reflective of this team, then the Orange coaches have announced that it will not be business as usual for their offense. Defense isin their DNA, so no real surprises there. But an offense that is multi-dimensional is a surprise. Payton Wilson at QB...a surprise. Pitch and catch on any down...a surprise. And I like to watch that type of football.

Now, if Wake Forest does the same, then maybe we are moving to truly dynamic football in the area. Other teams will have to adjust accordingly.

@2-d I think everyone in the area will be at the orange and hillside game lol. Northwood gotta show me something to take them serious. Aside from southern they don't have a quality win as a 3A team but time will tell. Less than a week away from real football

@MRAAU95, Hillside vs Orange is going to be an awesome game! I will be there for sure! Northwood is a team that scares me a little bit just bc I've seen people ranking them high and I know nothing about them. I do expect it to come down to Hillside and Orange this year though.

@white o ok. @2-D idk how much of a chance hillside has but as long as orange has a strong starting 22 they will be just fine during the regular season

Heard Orange "won" the scrimmage against Eastern 27-14. I think Orange will be very strong again this year. They lack depth but their starters are strong across the board. If a few key players go down it could really hurt them but if they stay healthy they will be very tough again.

Orange is hosting Eastern Alamance tonight at 7:00 for their last "Scrimmage". I would expect to see two fired up teams. With only 4 home games this season the Orange fanbase is somewhat treating this like a real game and should have a big turn out.

@LA no doubt they were good in their classification but when the comment was made that they have been really good over the past 7 years I stated they would have been an avg 4A team. In 2012 southern was an avg 4A at 7-5 and brought back a good amount in 2013 and mopped the floor with 3A. This season when y'all play hoggard and hillside it will tell us a lot about how good orange is. @gww I didn't really see orange as good until the last 2 maybe 3 seasons but hopefully moving forward you guys open up that nonconference schedule a little more

Time flies MRAAU95 - Orange was a good team in 2011 but young - playoff team, went down to Fayetteville and took a loss. The next year, if not for the Eastern Finals loss to Pharoh Cooper and that Havelock team in 2012, Orange would have arguably won the 3A State title. Orange learned a lot from that loss.

@ MRAAU, Orange played some good football back in 2010 and 2011. I think they turned the corner in 2011 when they made the run to the third round of the playoffs I think. Most of you guys really didn't take notice of them until Southern came into the conference. Back then they couldn't get over the Cardinal Gibbons hump. Back in 2010 and 2011, two of the best JV games I saw were between orange and Hillside. I really wish they would have played each other in a varsity game in 2012. I think that would have been a great game. I look forward to the Hillside-Orange game this year! Should be a great one!

Number 11 is a beast and I like number 83 at right end. Number 77 is a big drop off from edwards but there is speed and aggression everywhere else. But getting hyped from this video? SG guys mostly running around with their shoulderpads bouncing. Not much of an indicator of anything. Eastern will be much better showcase. That number 3 is a great looking athlete too!

2A isn't that competitive in any sport outside baseball and softball typically they have Shelby and whoever Shelby play in the final no pairety at all so a split 2a/3A off gate holds no weight then throw in nonconference schedules and the fact that the big 8 eliminates each other in the postseason every year with the exception of last year. I will admit the big 8 is top heavy. Webb, northern Vance, and cedar ridge have not been able to prosper. I think northern would be very competitive in 3A in the postseason and I believe hillside will definitely be

@MRAAU95 Kid at Northern is a rising Junior. (Bryce Jackson) He got 4 full games in last year and a half against hillside once Fenlon went injured. So he got some time on the field which will help this year, just have to see what scheme they run and the protection they have.

The kid that got hurt is going to play for Methodist this coming year. The qb this year is the one that filled in for him after the injury. Kid does have a great arm and is athletic and physical enough. Just need to give him time. We shall see.

Top 15 in 3A is nothing to sneeze at either. Because many of the differences outside the top 5 or so are razor thin. The top 2 teams in the Big 8 have represented well as @mraau points out. I am ok with that. But I understand your point. The Big 8 is not top 10 in the 3A ranking you give. Probably 8-12 are not really much different in that list.

  • Mraau95 Jul 3, 7:21 p.m.

If the PAC 6 was a top 20 then clearly the ranking system is a joke. I judge based off the postseason and the nonconference play in the postseason the big 8 has made the 4th rd 3 out of 4 years with 2 state championship appearances and 1 title sounds about the same as the big east only difference is the big east has been embarrassed by the big 8 in the playoffs

However, top 15 rating for the Big 8 is nothing to sneeze at. Hillside will raise the ranking. Oddly enough, the Pac 6 was a top 20 conference by Carolina Varsity. It could only have been due to Hillside and Cardinal Gibbons.

Valid point. I guess the opinion on which conference is the best is based on personal opinion. I'm of the opinion that the 2 horse race has created the separation from the other conferences in 3A East.

i guess it depends on what angle you're looking at.... I'm of the opinion that the Big 8 has been one of the best 3A conferences in the east over the course of the past 4 years. Especially when you examine the body of work by the top 2 teams. It's been years such as 2013 were it was Southern and Orange and then the rest of 3A, Orange was that doggone good.

    3) CAPE FEAR VALLEY 3A
    4) MIDEASTERN 4A/3A
    5) SOUTH MOUNTAIN 3A/2A
    6) COASTAL 3A 7) SOUTH PIEDMONT 3A 8) MID-STATE 3A 9) NORTH PIEDMONT 4A/3A 10) EASTERN CAROLINA 4A/3A 11) MOUNTAIN ATHLETIC 4A/3A 12) BIG SOUTH 3A/2A 13) BIG EIGHT 3A 14) WNC ATHLETIC 3A/2A 15) NORTHWESTERN 4A/3A 16) TWO RIVERS 3A 17) MID-PIEDMONT 3A

Yes. I am looking forward to the game. Wilson is a stud! Hoggard isn't the style team that Orange has struggled with, they are not as athletic as SD and NG. Hoggard has some big question marks but they should be very good on offense. They have a lot back on defense but their defense wasn't great last season. Hoggard should be able to test the defense of Orange.

@portcity I stated east because as far as 3A in the east we are a top 3 conference hands down and when you posting them records keep in mind that with the exception of last season the big 8 has eliminated itself from every playoff. What's the big 8s record in the postseason against other conferences and you forgot to add Gibbons who was a member for 2 years

There were 16 conferences last year with 3A teams in them. The Big 7 ranked 12th. SD was down last season with a 7-5 record and the rest of the conf went 21-35. I did not state they were in one of the weakest conf in the east I stated they were in one of the weakest conf in the state. However, I do not rate conferences, others do that. Adding Hillside helps this conf greatly. This has been a 2 team conf and now it is a 3 team conf.
    From 2013-2016
Northwood- 29-19 with 4 playoff blowout losses.
CR- 16-28 with 1 playoff app.
NV- 12-32 with 0 playoff app.
Webb- 10-34 with 0 playoff app. CH- 23-27 with 3 playoff app. Great season in 2014.

@portcity so assuming you know a little about 3A football in the east in your head you honestly believe that the big 8 was one of the weakest 3A conferences in the east last year??? think about all the 3A conferences in the east pound for pound the big 8 was nowhere near one of the worst. In 2014 alone the big 8 had 3 teams in the 3rd rd of the playoffs, name a conference who has done that. I think you are a tad confused because in the postseason they all some how end up playing each other. in the small 3A rocky mount has been one of the better teams and when they played orange in 2013( a team southern beat twice) rocky mount got the floor mopped with them. Hunt who is traditionally a power in 3A made 4 regional appearances in a row came to southern and bout got beat by 40. A lot of these top teams in 3A conferences wouldn't even have been playoff teams in the big 8 c'mon dude hillside makes it a better league but they played in a trash league we make them look better

  • Portcity FB Jul 1, 10:47 a.m.
    Towel Boy

Orange is 47-7 from 13-16. That is a great record! They have lost to SD 5 times. The Big 8 conference has not been a strong conference during that time. They were one of the weakest 3A conf in the state last year. Now add Hillside to their scd. I don't blame Orange for making a change. They have struggled against teams like SD and Hillside. This could backfire but it could also help them with the more athletic and explosive teams.
