It sounds like the SN/Green Hope game will be high scoring. I'll take SN in this one.

I expect the Firebirds to be explosive on offense and untested on defense. With new tougher schedule it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Only time will tell. Still have SN and RM at the top in the Big East. Fike might surprise some people.

Green Hope loaded? Maybe with receivers...the rest is yet to be seen. Their O-line needs to toughen up, the QB needs to be game ready, and they lost a good number of defense. I think they will do well in their conference, but it is a fairly weak conference for football.

I think Coach Green will use Jordyn Adams like he did Braxton Berrios. I looked at Jordyn's Hudl and the only thing he didn't do was kickoff and punt.

Catholic is the most affordable option for private school education in Charlotte. I think people would be stunned to find out what the median family income is. Mostly middle to upper middle class families. If you are uber rich your kid is going to Latin or Country Day

@white like seriously Gibbons has a great campus with great facilities and a private education does anyone honestly believe if they were recruiting they would for sure have a state championship by now. Even with championships Charlotte catholic is in the same boat a kid I played travel ball with in middle school went there and said out of all the Charlotte privates that was the last school ppl would send their kids to. Heck if I was Gibbons I would recruit my tail off because they have an extremely easy selling point but they do it the right way and it's time ppl let that argument go and play ball

95% of the kids would have to sit out a year if they transfer there. If you're going to gibbons it has to be as a 9th grader to be worth it. Heck, we have had kids here in Durham and throughout the east transferring mid season. Playing for two schools in the same year. Lol. People need to stop. And you're right @mraau. If they were cheating they'd be a lot better. They've built a really good program and done it the right way. No juggernaut.

They get more than a fair share of high quality football players including a bunch from Johnston county. I like Gibbons and think they coach the kids up well but I think most people know they have the feelers out year round.

Anybody remember when hillside tried to get stankavage to transfer over there for his senior season lol....it goes both ways man players come and go all the time whether we title it transfer or recruit its seems we can't agree to a grey area. As I have stated before in 15 years I haven't heard of 1 high profile high school athlete transferring to Gibbons they play within the rules of the association ...I know August is a long way a way but let's start this season off without contradictions

One of the reasons I have no problem with CG is that they have done it the right way. I respect that. They have not used their private status to abuse the system with a team of mercenaries. Clearly leadership has kept them with having a balance. With CG, players matriculate through their system, coached up from jv through varsity. I cannot see why anyone would not want to play them or have them in their conference for football. But we know it is a reality for them.

  • uBnice Jun 30, 8:52 a.m.
    Veteran

@CG By the way, both the private school issue and transfers/recruiting are topics that the NCHSAA currently grapples with. There are reasons why private schools have restrictions placed on them by the NCHSAA. There are also reasons why there are rules and regulations governing transfers. They are both issues requiring official statements. Even if you and I may see them as non-issues, they are not.

I say let them play ball.

Athens Drive (must have some kind of contract with them) 3 years in a row.

Cleveland County- don't know anything about them.

Cedar Ridge- been playing them since 2005

And of course Southern and Riverside
Wish we could take Athens and cedar ridge off and add someone really good to test us a little early on.

I've been on here showing love for Durham County, way before this off season, too. I prefer to continue to play Durham County schools than switch to wake county. I have respected the city. I love the " we will play whoever mentality." But don't come on here trying to beat a dead horse. Keep it 100 and let's play football.

Recuit one or two players versus select an entire team with a process that no other team has? C'mon man. I just do not see how you can whine about SD or Hillside transfers/recruiting and defend CG. I wonder what Hillside or SD would be like if they had the same process as CG: Wanna play football here and cannot afford it, we will help you financially?! NCAA has rules against that even at the HS level.

I have heard of 1 single high profile player transferring there so who are they recruiting because if it's Wake kids I'm sure cap 8 and swac fans would have said something to back it up

Nobody said they don't provide financial aid. But it is vetted by a company that is not associated with gibbons. I can say with 100% certainty that they recruit (at least in football) less than any program in Durham than maybe Jordan.

I have no problem with Cardinal Gibbons setup. As a Durham HS fan, you get no complaint from me regarding how they stock their football team. Any team in Durham will play Cardinal Gibbons with no questions asked. But Cardinal Gibbons does have the ability to select their players. To say that those kids populating the football team were selected because they were the best of the academic applicants is a bridge too far. Southern and Riverside play Cardinal Gibbons this year. I like that the Durham teams have always held out a welcoming mat for Cardinal Gibbons. Bring it!

  • Mraau95 Jun 29, 6:52 p.m.

If Cardinal Gibbons is recruiting they aren't doing that good of a job at it seems like most of those kids are coached up. In my almost 15 years in the area I haven't heard of a single high profile athlete transfer over there

Yes they have control over acceptance. But it is completely incorrect that they use scholarships to entice athletes. If a kid is on scholarship he/she can not participate in sports at the private schools with NCHSAA memberships.

For the Cap 7 I have 1. CG 2. Sanderson 3. Millbrook. However, id keep an eye on southeast raleigh with those athletes over there.

  • twannrock Jun 29, 10:22 a.m.

Millbrook has been noticeably quiet since the star D.E. signed a free agent deal with Heritage.
Heritage is making a run at the state but lacks the offensive power imo.

I agree. Sanderson would be the only team. We can score with the best of them. Not sure how our defense is going to be yet. The 7-7 never does any justice.

I thnk it is word semantics to say that Cardinal Gibbons does not recruit. They have full control over who is "accepted". Public schools do not have that control. And to boot, they provide "academic" assistance through scholarship which furthers deepens their selection process. Cardinal Gibbons football depends on their choosing the right players. Which easily translates into recruiting through the private school application process.

Only team in the Cap 7 that gibbons has to worry about this year is Sanderson. And they're going to have to be a lot better on offense this year to matter. Gibbons doesn't recruit. They have a different experience that some people want. Then they coach em up. Heck, nobody recruits harder than Millbrook around here and CG will mop them.
