    Sanderson 1st team D held Hillside scoreless in last year scrimmage. In fact Hillside didn't score until the 2nd team came in. That was without Currie. Much of that Def is back, should be a good preseason for both. Sanderson will be in the running for the best Defense imo.

    Sanderson is a scrimmage. First game night is 8/18. Hillside will be 1 and 3 heading into conference play. Should win all conference games unless Northwood can trip them up. Will be in good shape heading into state tourney.

    @tyler I remember that game. If hughes was accurate with the passes y'all would have blown them out the water. Mobile qbs were gonna dona tone on foot against that D. Hinton threw a bunch of short yard passes and runs on them when the long ball was taken away

    That Hillside defense in 2014 was darn good. Hughes will tell you himself that was the best D he went up against that year. Had to scrap and claw for every yard, that game in the playoffs was one of the better games I've seen in high school.

    @pick who was the number 1 corner? @bcv I'm thinkin y'all run 97% and throw 3%

    Defensively HHS has put up some impressive numbers over the years. Two years really standout for me. The state title year and one of the years that New Bern went undefeated and won the title, and Dudley went undefeated but was DQ from the playoffs. HHS held New Bern to an average of 12 points in two meetings. Additionally they held the undefeated Dudley team to about 12 points as well. That team could sub in their 2nd string DL and there was 0 drop off...... Same thing with the title team. You had 2's and 3's that would rotate in and they were just as good as the starters. But this year they didn't have that luxury. I saw times where if they needed to sub out their nose, they brought in another DE and moved their starting end inside.... It'll be interesting to see if they have any quality depth this fall.

    I almost think that they went with the 3-3-5 out of necessity. I don't think HHS had the depth along the D-line that they are accustomed to having. This led to less pressure on the QB resulting in their DB's being exposed.

    Yeah I agree. Although I've seen them adjust the 3-3-5 to a 4-2-5 by sliding #6 to an end. However the 4-2-5 that they ran in years past had D-1 ends. I really think #18 can be a D-1 end. Kid is strong as ox. Seen him play every position on the d-line at 225lbs.

    I agree. #25 was dynamic at RB before tearing his ACL. I look for him being a key cog for HHS offense next year, especially when it comes to utilizing Elliot in multiple areas. It would be great to see Elliot all over the field. At QB that #12 QB is the most accurate HHS QB i've seen since Lee. Stats don't lie. Also, that #3 (WR) is dynamic. He went toe to toe with the State's #1 CB and beat him consistently. Film don't lie. Teams routinely doubled him and still could not shut him down. On the offense line i'm not sure what they will look like but I do know that the college scouts are liking McGirt's size and athleticism.

    Overall this team had a very solid season last year. Look for them to be a state contender in17 if they can remain healthy in their front 7. Offensively they have a chance at being one of the most balanced HHS offenses in recent years, if utilized in that manner.

    Gonna need to get out of that 3-3-5 defense if they are going to get back to really stopping the run.

    #90 and #18 have played a lot of varsity ball. #18 played varsity as a 9th grader, and even had a few starts back then. Both have been starting since 10th grade on varsity. If #18 is active on the camp scene this off-season, look for him to emerge as Hillside's next D-1 prospect. I've seen him and McGirt (G/T) name pop up on the recruitment radar. #90 6'3 290 lbs has experience at end, nose and 3 technique. I look for him to begin to get attention too. My favorite player on the HHS defense is #6. Kid is a heat seeking missile. HHS is usually one of the top teams in the state against the run. Last year this was not the case. But with the return of the key pieces from last year, hopefully HHS run defense will be back to normal.

    @mraau

    Coach used a very conservative game plan most of last year. I think he passes more this year but it won't be wide ope like King's offense. If the QB has improved in the off season, then we me be 55% run 45% pass. If not, then probably 70% run 30% pass. I hope its the former and not the latter.

    @bcv y'all could have Brady at quarterback and y'all still wouldn't throw the ball....I do think if y'all were to go to throwing to put Elliot in the slot and let 25 pound the ball up the gut all game. Looking forward to this football season

    As for the Defense
    #90 Gray has the best size on the Line. Can be disruptive.
    #18 Will be a factor Also can be disruptive.
    #6 Lee. Turnover and Sack machine from last year. Very active LB,
    #40 Edgerton. Should get more PT this year. Last years experience should help him.
    DB's - Don't know much about them at this point. Hope we have ball hawks !!!

    Returning Players at Skilled Positions
    RB
    Of Course, the Oregon commit Jamal Elliott. A game breaker.
    #25 will be back from injury. Love this kid's game. Moves the chains
    **#27 I heard was transferring a while back but don't know how true that is. So we'll see.

    WR
    #3 Harrington. The kid just makes plays. Can be a deep threat.
    Dillon. - I expect to see him break out some this year.

    QB #12 - Last years starter. Hopefully he has developed in the passing game. IF so, great news !! #10 - The dual threat sophomore. I think he has a chance to start some games.

    Offensive Line: I don't know who is returning but it's just expected that these big boys up front will be pretty good.

    From what i know hillside has a great returning team coming back with rising seniors and juniors , they have offensive stars #3 Caleb Harrington , the Rbs #25 and @27 , and Wr Myles Dillon , hillside has some returning talent cant wait for this season . And on Defensive Majority of the starters where Juniors so they have some on both sides coming back . Looking forward to this great season

    Having seen both teams play a couple games last year Cape Fear was better than Weddington. The score would have been worst if Weddington played Dudley instead of Cape Fear.

    @jones

    Pretty good dline returners but you're right. The LBs were the best part of their defense last year. And the d was good but not great. I assume the qb will be better. Last year was his first shot at it.

    Have read and heard from folks there that neither ran very well but did better later in the day in drills/1 v 1s. Both clocked slower than desired 40 times. Evidently the Clayton WR, Heritage's Ricky Person and a WR from Green Hope were the top performers from around here. No idea if it is true but locally there are 3 RB invites to The Opening...Elliott, Person and Devon Lawrence. Wilson on defense.

    @white orange supposedly lost a lot 2 years ago and some how seem to bounce back...while their offense is horrible their system works. Long as they are put in throwing situations they are extremely tough to beat. @ubnice I like hillside in the matchup because you know my old saying u can't fight fire with fire wnf I think hillside may have the edge in personnel but hey that's why we play the game right...look forward to being in whoever hosts that game stadium that Friday

    Side note...both Elliott and Wilson were invited to The Opening put on by Nike after their performances in Charlotte last weekend (also, as some will say, their commitments to major Nike schools). These are two big time athletes and recruits.

    The game is worth seeing 2 of the areas top players, Payton Wilson (UNC commit) and Jamal Elliot (Oregon commit) square off against each other. I think Hillside wins because they will generate more offense than Orange. Who will QB Orange?
