@OC27278 Sounds like Coach Smith will have his hands full. Losing 5 OL from a run-first, no-pass offense is brutal. Not having developed a back-up qb is even worse. It will be interesting watching Orange this year. I especially look forward to the Hillside and Southern games.

@oc even with 2 games in a week only 14 points was put up against a non playoff team it actually makes it worse that they had 300 yds of offense and only put up 14. Also it doesn't matter who y'all have play qb orange doesn't throw the ball anyway @whitesanta not sure how the free agency is going right now all I know is we need a quarterback and a left tackle off the top of my head

@MRAAU95 with regard to the narrow OHS victory over N Vance, that game was played on a Thursday (moved up due to a storm) after having played Northwood on Monday (delayed to rain out) - Hard to maintain a routine. Orange ran all over NV (north of 300 yds I think), but had a ton of penalties that killed drives. Not that it matters, but I don't think I'd figure that game into the arguments.

Still not sure what to expect out of OHS this season - Wilson probably won't come off the field and returning defense will be coached up, but they have to replace a ton on offense (QB, FB, WR, all 5 OL).

@knightgrad I think last year is one of the few years you can't use score comparison as a measure to how you'll fair against another team. Yes southern lost 7-3 to hillside and 49-7 to orange but orange only beat northern Vance 14-0 while southern put on a clinic against them, hillside should have probably beaten Dudley who went on to win the state championship by 50, while hillside lost in the first rd. @pick Elliot didn't play in this past seasons southern game but he was there in 2015 along with Adams and got their tails whooped. At some point I do believe hillside will have to be able to air the ball out also to go to the next level but as far as what they have coming back now hands down they beat orange by 20

Orange loses way too much to hang with hillside. Southern is a question mark. Depends on how recruiting goes. The cupboard is basically bare. Orange takes second if Southern can't work the free agent market as well with all their assistants at jordan now. Lol.

Orange will not be close to the team they were last year. A defense that gave up a total of 35 points during the season?! That will not happen this year. Orange was dominated by Riverside last year. Offense did not score a point. Northern had Orange on the ropes. Orange's extreme defense saved the day for them over and over. Wilson is the only starting LB Orange has returning and the 3-4 defense is predicated on great LB play. I think Hillside will crush Orange this year.

Last year, I thought that pretty consistently, Orange was a better team than Cardinal Gibbons, and Gibbons beat Hillside all but for a poor coaching decision. This year, I simply don't think Hillside will have specifically the offensive line needed to win the conference.

I meant what I said, I think Elliot is a very good player, but Orange is the best defense Hillside would have seen all year aside from Dudley, who had probably their worst offensive game of the season against Hillside. As I said, I think it would be a good game, I am just of the opinion that Orange's brand of football is perfect for beating Hillside. It's just my opinion. And as for the thing with the new head coach, nothing is going to change. They're still going to have a stifling defense, they're going to do what they're going to do on offense, and they're going to put the ball in their opponent's court as far as stopping them, and I think that between the two, Orange is better up front on O and D, which is what would decide that type of game.

    @ Knightgrad
and...... you can't compare scores and make a prediction from that, on no level. You claim to have played, so you should know better....... Dudley beats Cape Fear 54-0, Dudley also beat Hillside 32-26, does that mean Hillside blows out Cape Fear. Come on dude, you just lost all credibility with that comment.

there is a lot to that and .....

comparing those scores mean nothing if every single player on both teams came back. won't be the same team or coach at Orange next year. no way that common opponent comparison can be any indicator or even relevant for the Orange vs Hillside game this upcoming season.

@MRAAU I think that the 7-3 Hillside over Southern score from last year, compared to the 49-7 Orange over Southern score is a pretty good indicator. I think the cupboard will be bare for Southern next year. I think it's Northern's year to finally beat them, and I think it will be a toss up between Northern and Northwood due to a lack of familiarity. I think it will be between Hillside and Orange to win the conference and as of right now I'm taking orange. Based on a combination of scheme and size I think they're the perfect kryptonite to Hillside who more often than not relied on athleticism to overcome all last year. One thing is for certain though, it will be a very, very exciting conference next year. Unless you're a fan of Chapel Hill, CR, of East lol

    Continuation......

    to challenge Hillside and Orange.

Northern has to make a hire soon so that whoever it is can get into Lucas and Carrington to attempt to retain the talent in North Durham. The Middle School champion from last year hails from North Durham.

I agree with MrAAU- With the number of under classroom returning at LB and in the DL for HHS, if you don't have offensive balance you're not going to move the ball.

Overall HHS has to be my pre-season #1 in Big 8. They're the only team returning their starting QB, RB, and two WR's. The wildcard in this group is Harrison at WR. He went toe to toe against one of the top DB's in the state and beat him multiple times. The QB had a very good year as a junior. And of course HHS returns the #8 rank RB in the nation. HHS will reload at WR, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more spread formations.

Orange will be a mystery until August. They have to develop a QB and be more unpredictable. I doubt the double wing and running the ball 90% of the game will be enough.

Southern is a mystery. But statistics are a good predictor for the future, and Southern has been producing major D-1 talent since 1999. I expect them to reload and be competitive enough to

Having seen orange play over the last 4 years what in the world would make anyone think they could beat hillside?? Unless orange starts throwing next year they not beating them on the ground.

  • uBnice Feb 16, 8:49 p.m.

@whitesanta Orange struggled at qb. Unless they get a free agent qb from somewhere, I do not see their offense doing anything. And their defense loses too many seniors to be as dominant as they were last year. Northern has been a td shy of Orange the past 2 years, but I think it is a toss-up this year. I am counting on SD talent and coaching over Orange and Northern with new coaches and depleted rosters.

I agree @ubnice. They need to change up that 3-3 defense though. Teams were able to run on them too easily. Scotland may run for 600 if they don't change things up. But all in all they have the best talent coming back across the board. Orange lost a ton but have more coming back than southern and northern easily so I stick with them at 2. I think northwood improves.

    Hillside
    Southern
    T3 Orange
    T3 Northern
    Northwood
    Cedar Ridge
    Chapel Hill East Chapel Hill

I think Hillside wins the conference outright.

    I will go with:

    Hillside
    Orange
    Northwood
    Southern
    Northern
    Chapel Hill
    Cedar Ridge East chapel hill

Playoff reps depends on OOC schedules. First three for sure. Probably Southern. Northern could squeak in if they don't load up OOC like the last 4 years plus. Not sure the admin has smartened up or not.
