@mraau I agree. I think Hillside will crush Orange this year.

Don't really think orange has a chance against hillside. Literally Orange could be looking at finishing 3rd or 4th. Northern midseason and southern ain't gonna be no cake walk same goes with hillside. Not making any assumptions about the season. A lot of things can happen between now and August 1st

Add gibbons and Wakefield to the mix...not sure how southern will do non conference but as also they will be battle tested. Really wish they could have got Western alamance on the schedule tho

Great hire by Orange. This was a no brainer from the get go. Orange will be contender for the Big 8. Beasley and Wilson return, along with a lot of young skill players. I'm looking forward to Big 8 race. Hopefully Hillside and Southern won't be too beat up before conference play. Colossal non-conference schedule for Hillside with Dudley, Scotland County and perennial state power New Bern who's due for another strong team. Strong non-conference schedule for SD also. They open up with Western NC version of Orange in perennial state power Asheville Reynolds, and Fayetteville 71st.

See orange and Durham have different steps in the coaching hiring process...I guess Orange County has to go to the board for a hire when in Durham if someone is in the building the get the job. The transition from jones to Robinson was literally almost overnight and pretty quiet. Does smith not work at orange high?

    He will do great.
And in the words of Hank Jr.
He is standing in the shadow of a very famous man, Coach Moser

No doubt. But that can be done with an assistant. orange football has always performed beyond its talent (that talent level has had some big ingredients lately though) and their defense was the reason. It is their mentality. Their badge. Smith is the biggest reason for that. Not hiring him jeopardizes it. And the Wilsons have no more sons. :)

They need someone who will open up the offensive scheme a little bit. I think they have the athletes to do some more sophisticated stuff.

Just like coaches sometimes outthink themselves, so do administrators. Choosing someone other than Smith would be insane!

I'm not on the inside, i'm just an observer from the outside. From my observation, Orange defense has been the heart and soul of their ball club. The defense is the reason why they've been a state contender the last 4 years. My opinion, Coach Smith should be the most sought after Head Coach candidate in the area, his work speaks for itself. I've watched his defenses overachieve every year. I've been sold on him since 2013 playoff game. His defense in 2013 had 0 FBS, 0 FCS, and 0 DII prospects, but they faced a SD offense with 5 FBS, and 3 FCS prospects and they held that power offense to 10 points at half.

But if Orange doesn't make the hire, I'm sure someone in Durham would hire him quick for HC job. I know where I would love to see him become HC at, and if Orange doesn't hire him it may eventually happen.

Van Smith has been the backbone of Orange Football. As much as we focus on offense when it comes to this sport, you don't win championships without an outstanding defense. He is also an all around great guy!

Very true egos come into play and instead realizing this ship is good and steady. People want to put there own imprint on it and tear down what was already built instead of trying to trying to build on what's already there.

If you ask the players, they want Coach Smith, they respect him as a coach, teacher and a mentor.
He has help bring pride back to Orange football, and the community support shows that at home and away games.

West Charlotte and Independence were notable with the same coach.

All it takes is one change in leadership to be the dimise of a program ....independence, Richmond county and west Charlotte are three of the most storied programs in the state and none of the 3 are even factors in the playoffs and the more I think about it independence and west Charlotte won a combined 3 games

It seems like Orange is in the situation we in Clayton was when Coach Fowler retired. Everyone thought it would be someone from the staff two in particular but the process got drawn out and the principal decided to try to make his on mark and bring in a guy that was his buddy. Program went south for those 3 years he was there. I hope it works out better for you guys.
