LRHS will be fine...they may surprise a few people this year...coaches leaving to run their own programs doesn't mean disharmony...just quality...

Good, it's often easy for things typed on boards to be misconstrued. Also good new staff is doing well. Who is on the new staff?

Are you insinuating that previous staffs were not pulling together? If so, that would be the first any of us on the boards have heard of it. My impression was always they were pretty tight over there.

Story is that the new staff is very organized and pulling together verses apart and the team liking what their seeing.

LRHS hasn't had a staff where assistants didn't leave for HC positions...they are all over the place...last stable staff was under cgreen...

I thought one of the strengths at Leesville Road was their consistent and veteran coaching staff! Why the changeover?

Word on the street is not always to be believed. Longevity plus results were the algorithm used. Hobgood was identified very early in process. Very early.

Leesville I feel picked a good coach. Good hire, he is a proven winner and has a good track record. He will bring some quality assistants I'm sure.

Based on the new BB5 rule my two favorite teams this year are Wake Forest and Mallard Creek. That way I'm covered in the east and west, and if they happen to play each other I'm guaranteed a win.

Cantbustem........you are allowed to have two favorite teams.....it is called the BB5 rule!!! I am invoking the BB5 rule since Garner is stealing all the players from Middle Creek! :) so now my two favorite teams are Garner and Middle Creek!! :) I am looking forward to a good season for my teams.

Great hire if this is true. I think he will fit in well at LR. They will be even more physical than before. Great point by coachp...why not have him back at Northern? Makes absolutely no sense!

  • coachp78 May 19, 2014

That would be a great hire for any school. Very organized disciplined coach that has built South Granville into an excellent program. Why Northern Durham as never welcomed him home is shocking.

I will agree with your last post, cap8. Rumors I heard did not have anything to do with any offers extended or interviews conducted (other than there were some last week). None were directed at the AD. Most anyone I've heard comment has said he has the best interests of the program at heart and tried to help both Smothers and Green. There does seem to be some concern about commitment at the top. I have no idea other than some things I've heard. I guess we'll see as things progress.

  • Cap8oldtimer May 19, 2014

    Oldtime, you are solid.

My last post was directed to the coach who posted and said a number of things about the hiring process but said he had not applied. There are rumors because folks predict this AD to have interviewed certain people and extended certain offers -- actually it is clear the AD has worked to keep the process airtight and to address a new era of football at LRHS. When there is a void of information, rumors try to fill the vacuum.

I am not going to address the Garner/Millbrook program longevity comments--particularly as to Garner and the classroom. I am from Garner and got out as soon as I could.

Cap8oldtimer, notsure what facts I have wrong. I said I heard rumors, I said administration was important, I said I hoped you were right and that they got a quality guy. Just where was I wrong? I never said I believed the rumors, just that it was disturbing to hear them. I don't have a dog in this fight other than as a fan of Triangle football I'd like to see strong programs remain that way. I don't think you and I differ much in our thoughts on what is going on other than maybe you're more optimistic than I am, but you seem to have knowledge to what's going on they I could have, so again, I hope you're right.

    "Having trouble keeping assistants"

Over 3 years one left to become a head coach and his top assistant went with him to become an OC. One left to take a head coaching job closer to where he lived. That's all the ones he "had trouble keeping."

  • West maybe is bestest May 17, 2014

Couldn't agree more. Quality head coach is a first step and a huge one but ita only a first one.

  • coachp78 May 17, 2014
    Rookie

If you look across any county or state for that matter you can easily see which schools are getting the most help from their administration and school boards. Garner and Millbrook have had lasting success not just because of their on field traditions in all sports but because they have administrators that bring quality coaches in for the kids in all the programs. Then you have schools out there that don't even bother getting coaches for all their teams let alone get a full football staff. If Leesville is going to avoid a drop they better do more than just hire the top candidate for head coach.

Actually, my comments were not originally directed to you but you revealed quite a bit in your reply, coach. You have several facts wrong. Shake it off and let it go.

  • ishudknow May 17, 2014

You can call it garbage if you want, cap8. Are you involved in the process? Are you saying that it wasn't a case of not working with teaching spots but a case of just making that up to tell candidates they didn't want to interview? Does your version apply to the all the top names that have pulled out? Does your version apply to teammugs' guy--who reportedly is going to another area school? Does your version apply to why Smothers was having trouble getting and keeping assistants? Now, if you're accusing me of being the one who is disgruntled, I'm afraid you're dead wrong. I've never been interested in that job or any other head coaching job. As for my information, it doesn't come from people who wanted that job, either.

  • oldtimecoach May 17, 2014
    Sports Legend

Perhaps you're right, cap8oldtimer. I hope things turn out well there. No one, outside of some rivals perhaps, want to see a solid program slide. It is clear, though, that if administration isn't doing what it needs to do at any school, the program won't remain strong. Nobody outside the process knows whats going on in it or even who applied (unless someone tells that they did), but when there are multiple negative rumors floating around, it's not a good sign. Again, maybe you're right and they'll end up with a top notch guy who keeps that program going.

  • Cap8oldtimer May 17, 2014

Whoever came up with all that "history" sounds like they got an extra special rejection from the LRHS job. This is how it works from a hiring perspective. The legion of coaches who applied and did not get a call back by the deadline of just days ago (look back at earlier threads) now know they aren't being considered. Those that did get a call (many as a courtesy) but not invited further into the expedited process were politely told their teaching position needs did not align with the school's. Passed over applicants, some from very close proximity and in rivalry, aren't told they aren't good enough-- they are told there is no slot for them to teach. Someone who got passed over is now talking and sharing his hurt feelings. That's how it works too. Jaws start to flap and those that had hoped for more take it out this way. there is ansolutely no mystery about Smothers leaving. I am told people close to that program and him have built a brick wall around him and aren't sharing the very good things that have gone well for him this year because it's nobody's business but his. People always looking for the negative narrative. Always know that when attacks are made like this, programs obviously passed on people for the right reasons. Same process/timing going on in other NC schools right now. As teammugs would say, garbage.
