Look past the football team (who is on the rise) and I say Sanderson always has a good basketball team, baseball is top of the conference, soccer is one of the best in the state and top 12 school in the state

I don't live in any of the areas, but I'm familiar with them. I have lived in Fayetteville for my high school career, and now Greenville. Fayetteville or "Fayettnam" as it most commonly referred is said to be a dangerous place. I have never once had any problems there.

In every city or town, there are places that you just should not go around a certain time of night. Is any Wal-Mart safe at 9 pm? lol

Sir you are more than welcome to come join our family @ Garner anytime you wish sir.You will find that Garner is a big family and welcome family and kids to our area. I will go as far as sending you a season invite to come sit and watch games on the home side so you can see first hand how friendly and caring we are to each other in support of our kids win or lose.Alot of people take Garner wrong in a lot of ways because we do not think we are better than no one but our kids and coaches put forth the effort to be the best they can be week after week. History has proven us to have great teams here because of that effort that keeps the health and growth of family number 1 here. Just to give you a laugh I will tell you about what I did when my kids played here. I would take late lunches just to go watch the kids at practice and to go to games in middle schools. That all red Ford truck followed that bus to every game and win or lose we still loved our kids and their efforts.Coaches in the area could learn alot from the staff of coaches here at Garner that its alot more than x's and o's that make teams winners. The current coach has been on staff for over 15 years as was the coaches before him. You never hear alot about where our kids are going but they end up in places in the SEC,ACC, BIG12 among others. Then we get to see some on Sunday and even in the Super Bowl. This has gone on since 1977 here when Eric Williams that played here could be seen playing for the Steelers. Then Carl Franks for Tampa Bay and the list goes on. Watch the draft this year for Reggie Bowens from USC of the SEC. The kids have to put in the work tho and they always drop in to check on the current teams @Garner and see the coaches and teachers.Garner=Family,God,School then sports. With any of those pieces missing it will never work no matter who or what team you are and yes that includes Garner. GO TROJANS

Rlee1117, hearing some of the responses from the Garner folks regarding my comments leads me to believe there is a strong sense of community in Garner. As a result, people take offense to comments that don't reflect positively on the town. Say anything negative about Apex or Cary and it doesn't bother me at all because I don't have a sense of a tight community here where I live. Apex is a nice area with nice people but there not as tight as Garner. When I moved to the area in 1993 I wrote Garner off as a place to live but in hindsight that may have been my loss.

You are forgiven sir and I too am sorry if I stepped on any toes! This has been my home for 53 years and we love our town as well as our kids greatly. To get to the real point Wake County schools as far as sports are concerned has moved to the top in many ways as a whole.I was born in the old Rex Hospital and raised in Garner as was my kids. If I had to do it all over I would still pick Garner as the place to be because they really care alot about the family as a whole and are very serious about their kids and schools here. When I was in school in my younger years wake county was never on top of sports. But now it seems alot of titles come thru Wake county first.

I personally would not live in Garner, I told the originator of this thread to drive around and decide for himself. The Walmart comment was a joke. I have been there 3 times and ran into a lot of characters, the third and last time someone tried to open the driver side door of my car in the parking lot a few seconds after I got in. They were asking for some money and I told them I didnt have any. The door was locked so they were not able to open it. As it turns out, this Walmart is not in Garner it just borders Garner at 401 and 70. There plenty of places I wouldn't live in the triangle. But why list them and upset more people. There are plenty of great neighborhoods in Garner and a lot of great people. The area bordering Garner Highschool is having some issues but good luck finding an area that doesn't have crime! Once again I'm sorry if I offended anyone! In retrospect I wish I would have left the nonpositive comments about Garner out.

Garner is excellent in football and basketball and as far as I know very competitive in all sports. They are a magnet school so the academics should be good. The problem is you may not want to live there. Drive around town and decide for yourself. Drop by the Garner Walmart any time after 9pm and you'll think you walked into the bar scene from the original Star Wars. kmagnusson

I got a question for you sir. As far as crime is concerned how many times have we seen high profile murders in the Apex and Cary areas vs any from the Garner area.Correct me if I am wrong but was it not kids from Apex Cary area that killed that kid and tried to hide it a few years back? Garner is and has been a home that loves its kids and backs its schools. Some of the kids @ MC even went to schools here over forced busing but I have not seen or heard a word from anyone about Garner being a bad place to live other than your remarks here.

Did I say he was a bad coach? No. And whether you admit it or not, you are a parent in the program and you are biased. We both have the facts and the articles are there for all to read and make their own conclusions. Personally, I think a coach should stick around to maintain what they build. Not everyone believes that. But I do.

The longest he has stayed at one HS is 3 years. So, don't choose GH because of the coach, choose it for the academics and the school. Many parents want their sons to play for certain coaches. Whether you want to believe it or not, his past shows a pattern (I won't call it a habit anymore) of leaving. That's all I'm saying.

    @cap8
As a parent of a GH FB player, we are lucky to have him. If he leaves, we will wish him well. Hope he stays! Not sure where he would go but I'm guessing it would be a step up. Many of the posters on the site took great pleaasure in bashing our program over the last 6+ years. GH isn't the easiest place to coach football. Soccer/Tennis/ Golf yes. Football no. Many talk about the 03/04 years. However that was before they built Panther Creek. Since then GH had been something like 3-63 and 0-38 before he came.
Garner is one of, if not the premier coaching job in Wake county and is closer to his home. If he interviewed, I'm sure he was not the only one outside of the school to apply. Hopefully our community and administration realize that Garner thought enough of him to ask him to come and interview. It shouldn't be thrown around this forum that wanting to coach at a high level is a bad thing.
He resigned from WJ to take a college job. Should not be too surprising since he was a college coach before. Correct me if I'm wrong but usually the HC of the university decides when to offer a job. Not the other way around.
Define habit? One time? Left WJ to become a college coach again. You stated it is habit not the article. Winning then leaving to go to another program is what USUALLY happens at all levels. Do we prefer the alternative? We are glad that he won, gave our kids a sense of pride and an opportunity to play in a playoff game. The senior class before him had never won a varsity game!
He took our kids and made them into a football team. One the school and community can be proud of again. The funny thing is he wasn't even the first choice. Again, we are glad he chose us.
You state no cricism in your post. Can't agree with that statement. What was positive or unbiased? Just clearing the air since some readers believe all that is posted on this site is factual. I have also listed the facts. No judgements, no criticism. Just what I know.

    @tri9

It was reported in one of the forum's on this site that the head coach at GH interviewed for the open Garner position so that is where I got that information. Not sure when or the title but if you want to look it up you can. I am sure the topic had something to do with Garner or head coach changes.

Secondly, if you can use google you can find alot about a coach without knowing them. For example:

    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/prepsnow/dixon-to-lead-green-hope-football

This says he was fired from NCCU before taking GH job. Other articles report that he quit WJ right before the season started. More importantly, right after his first successful season is when he chose to leave.

    http://www.highschoolot.com/content/story/3277900/

The HSOT article is the most interesting and really points out that he has a habit of leaving schools after they are successful.

Not sure what inside information you think I know that is not readily available for anyone interested in finding out. Google his name and you can confirm the limited information I have. According to his past reported in articles written about him, he leaves jobs as soon as he turns them around. Seems to be true since he is looking to leave GH after one winning season and he did the same at West Johnston.

No judgments, no criticism, no opinion, no knowledge of him personally. Just what I read.

Only got this to say then I'm out johnewalker323. Since you are from the SEC area I am sure you have seen South Carolina from the SEC playing. Garner had about 4 of the starters over the last few years there playing for USC.. You can also see some of the former Garner players now playing on Sunday in the NFL. So as far as Academics are concerned as long as your kids work hard then the sky is the limit. You can count on them being taught no only football but also how to handle success also. I know you watch this past year's Super Bowl and seen Culliver with the 49'ers #29. he played at Garner also. David West now playing for the Pacer's in the NBA is also from Garner. But no matter what or where you play you only get out of it what you are willing to put into it working hard. AS far as living here or around Garner I have lived here for 53 years and would not trade it for any other place to live in the world to raise my kids. I raised 3 here and all of them went to Garner and did great. Either way welcome to North Carolina and Wake County and best of luck to your kids at what ever they do.

Green Hope's coach has a habit of leaving after having a winning season (West Johnston). He was fired from a college program and interviewed for Garner this year (word is that he is already trying to get out of GH).

The coach at Panther Creek who you labelled "average" was at Middle Creek until last season. In 2010 PC was playing for the Regional Championship.

Cantbustem and twetherby are right, do your own research. Coming on this forum is NOT the best strategy.

If it were me, I would visit the schools, speak with the administration, speak with the athletic directors, and speak with the coaches for the sports your children would play. I would also not be swayed by postings on a board like this recommending their school over others. These are fans advocating for their schools. Their schools may not fit your family's needs. You have only mentioned a few of the schools that would be potential fits, there are others. Like someone said, it also depends upon where you would like to live. Most of the schools mentioned are on the south side of Wake County. Also in that area are Holly Springs, Athens Drive, Cary, and Apex. If north Wake is where your family would like to be, there is Wakefield, Wake Forest, and Heritage that would be good schools. Again, lots of choices. I coach at one of these schools that I have mentioned, but, I would be more concerned about how it fit your family then trying to force you into my choice.

Garner: Great football tradition, great administration (Principal), great athletes, new coach, new OC, AD former coach, Average academics and location, average other sports
Green Hope: Below average football, Below average administration, Good Coach, Great academics, great location, great other sports
Panther Creek: Average football team, Bad previous season, Good academics, below average administration, Average coach, decent other sports. Above aveerage location
Middle Creek: Good football. Average other sports. Above average coaching. Above average location. Average administration but looking for AD.

To lose a game and not punt once was tough. Leesville punted several times. To have a ref move the ball on a 4th down play back a foot after the initial spot was even tougher. MCs defense was weak last year but Leesvilles was weaker. At least MC gives Garner a good game each year while Leesville gets BLOWN OUT! Read my earlier posts where I admitted Garner always beats us and will probably beat MC again next year. Leesville is the most over rated football team in the area. I wish we could drop Garner and replace them with Leesville. If we could an undefeated season would be there for the taking!

Middle Creek runs the spread offense and they graduated 3 Senior receivers. The last six years the QBs had anywhere from 3800 yards to 5000 yards passing per season. The QB next season will do the same. Middle Creeks defense was porous last season and hopefully will improve this year. MC only lost one game last year during the regular season. However, they had to out score all opponents since the defense had difficulty stopping people. MC lost in the second round of the playoffs last year even though they didn't PUNT the whole game. Four interceptions and a fumble did them in and they lost 37 to 30. It sounds like MC could use your child on both sides of the ball.

Leesville Road High School will be a great choice for your boys and girls. The school is a campus that includes Leesville middle and elementary schools.

Their academics are top notch and is a "School of Distinction". They offer AP courses for all core subjects and are well thought of by all the universities in the state.

Their athletics programs are top notch as well. The football program has won 2 straight Cap 8 Championships and will probably win again this year. Also they have shared 3 more titles within the last 6 years. Basketball has a new coach that has been to State Championships in a lower classification before coming to Leesville and has the team back in the playoffs this year and they will only get better down the road. Baseball is always at the top of the conference as well.

Girl's soccer is the top program in the state. They have won 4 state championships in the last 6 years and have a great coach who also coaches the boys program. Girls basketball just hired a new coach this year and is working to turn the program around.

Leesville Road is located off I-540 (exit 7) and is near Briar Creek Shopping Center and RDU airport and Crabtree Valley Mall. There are some very nice neighborhoods surrounding the school. You will find out that the school is a very tight community and supports its teams.

Give Leesville a look and meet the administration and coaches. Phone # is 919-870-4250 and the address is 8409 Leesville Road.

    Again, Welcome to Wake County!!!

Middle Creek Highschool, West Lake Middle School, West Lake Elementary and Middle Creek elementary are all on West Lake rd in Apex. The middle school is about 1000 feet from the High School. From the first school to the last in the row of schools is less than a half mile. My kids all walked to school from Middle School up. We drove the half mile to the elementary school because they were too young to walk. Middle Creek should win the Trinine conference again in football but has lost a lot of Seniors. I believe Middle Creeks JV beat Garner 63 to 0 last year but that is meaningless. Middle Creek has only beaten Garner one time in it's 11 year existence. Expect MC to lose to Garner again this year. Every year it seems the game unfolds the same way, MC will turn the ball over a minimum of 5 times and Garner will have no turnovers and Garner will win by 14. It is the closest game Garner plays every year during the regular season. Garner blows all the other teams out! Garner is Wake County's version of Hoover AL. In football.
