It's been said later in this thread, but the level of coverage that HSOT tries to put forth is immense. Attempting to have up-to-date information in every area they've ventured at all times is tough even if you have a staff of dozens devoted solely to what you see on this site alone. And based on responses by staff over the years I'm not so sure they have dozens. If the case then you typically see ups-and-downs in coverage.

Personally, in the past if I looked at an area of coverage and contemplated why it was either incredible or why it might be lacking IMO, I first thought about what type of resources might be needed to make it all happen. Trying to put yourself in the shoes of those here at HSOT or at the N&O prep staff or Herald Sun prep staff begins to put in perspective that what one might believe is easy to do or only takes a few minutes, isn't so easy and in fact takes much longer.

As for the highlight tapes. It's been said a thousand times, but one more time. Make the tape - send it directly to the college coach that recruits the area (call their office to find this out if local HS coach doesn't have info). Call and get correct address. If they do something via email/online check. And then follow-up. Call and have a convo with Coach. Ask questions that allow you to verify they've watched the film. At that point you'll get a good idea of interest.

It wasn't about not getting a retweet, it was about the story being ignored. Nick explained it and I'm good with it. In reality WRAL needs to step up and get Nick some help here if everything stops when he takes a vacation.

Obviously some of you don't understand how journalism works. A single source is not enough to confirm a story. When I was writing, we had to have at least 3 sources to run something.

Twitter is not a "source" for anything other than rumors. Can't believe someone is upset because he didn't get a retweet.

It's cool bull city ,when you are blessed with a name like mine and here sheesh for the millionth time plus ,well some times it gets the better of me.as for rumors ,I don't spread them,I was stating that I have reached out in the past to these people and never received a response, that's all.those moments are frustrating sometimes and if they don't recall or remember just say that .i just didn't think that reaching out to them about certain players was journalistic .like I said bull city ,it's cool ,thanks bro.

^^^dude. Sheesh just means sheesh. I have no idea what your last name is.

In journalism, information must be verified and confirmed as an actual fact anything else is just a rumor. Nothing more and nothing less.

Bull city ,who said anything about passing rumors? I wouldn't bs anyone on this site just to see myself talk so if you are directing that towards myself and mocking my real last name then that is classless, not you but what you are posting .i will say that I don't hide behind a site name like yourself ,I put it out there and I take my lumps and at the end of the I know who iam.

    SHEEEEESH!!!!

This site is not being ignored at all. Some of you need to get a better understanding of the responsibilities of journalists and media persons. Nick and the crew can't just pass rumors around this site all recklessly. This ain't TMZ!

So, some of you think college coaches come here looking for players? Hilarious. And one of you first says that Nick ignored your all state info, then turns out you gave him nothing. So, as usual, people complaining about stuff for mostly no reason

Nick, I think you do a GREAT job with High School OT. Love your coverage and interaction right here; and LOVE your Twitter feed. I'm often texting my student athlete son and giving HIM the latest updates! Keep up the great work; it does not go unnoticed that you work your tail off; particularly during playoff selection times, the beginning of each season, etc.

I decided against the All-OT Team this year because last year we had a very hard time getting coaches to submit their information, which makes it more likely we overlook someone, and the result from that is not worth the time.

Hopefully one day we can figure out a better way to handle that. It would help if we could get someone (like the governing body of the HS sports) to streamline the statistic reporting process.

Quite frankly the first I even heard of the news was about a week into January. When it came out I was out of work before Christmas, when I came back it was HSOT Invite time (when if it doesn't happen inside Broughton's gym or on my way home, I don't know about it), and then the minute I was done with the HSOT Invite I took a 1.5 week vacation.

By the time I heard about it, the story was long gone.

I think that if you would have included a link from the Wilson Times it would have been reported or "retweeted" just for the fact that it was confirmed by an independent source. There is nothing wrong with giving "inside info" but these are lives we are talking about and I'd be willing to bet that at least half of the information that is tweeted/emailed to Nick ends up being a partial story or not true at all. Could you imagine the uproar if someone made a claim, it was put out as a "story", and proved to be partially or fully incorrect. Any news organization worth it's salt would not put that out there.

It's like Nick said, he can't cover everything in the state because its just him and he has no help. Basically, that means he is stuck in Wake County. Nick, can WRAL not afford to hire you a real assistant? I am sure that would allow your coverage to expand into the surrounding counties of the Triangle. There seems to be prospects for the job on this forum as I type. LOL

I mean it sounds like you're saying because the school didn't think to contact you with the news then it wasn't significant or news worthy?

Nick, I understand you get several tweets but why did you feel it wasn't newsworthy? Would it have different if I had included a link to the Wilson Times story about it? The news was out there and it should have been reported. Our record over the years and our input to the site deserved mention. 200+ wins at Hunt, 3 eastern finals in a row, 5 overall, and leaves for a conference rival is news.

Hey nick first of thanks for the response ,one i am not a computer person so I apologize for saying that this is a blog.i don't think I ever sent you news about all state players.i mentioned these players names on this site over the last couple of years and I don't work with you to know that.i did not say you guys are a scouting site ,all I did was vent frustration with you from time to time especially when these players are again in your proverbial backyard.i have nothing but respect for what you do for this site and at least you respond with a few sentences unlike Tim Stevens with a " thank you for the e-mail"response.i will continue to ask that if you guys need a hand with anything please feel free to reach out.nick ,which all state teams do you post ? Public and independent? And all 1a thru 4a?just inquiring.

My initial post was in effort to make a good venue for High School sports GREAT !!! I enjoy this site and appreciate the volumn of work that goes into it. Writing about a few Colleges I'm sure is easy compared to the large number of High Schools in the area. So I will say thank you for doing what you do.

I was just very surprised that the Recruiting info and High Light films appear to be last updated June 2011. I sent a High Light in to Nick about 3 months ago and was excited about having it posted. I also noticed that if you want to create a profile you can not because the graduation year stops at 2011. So any current players can not take advantage.

    jsh -

I get (literally) hundreds of tweets per day... We have well over 9,000 twitter followers. I do not read every tweet that gets sent to me. I also cannot just RT something about someone resigning when it isn't confirmed independently. People send us tips all the time that turn out to be completely false or misleading.

Schools, coaches and athletic directors know how to get information to us. It happens on a daily basis.

Nick, I tweeted you the news about Raper leaving Hunt for Northern Nash, and then when Stevie Hinnant was named coach a couple weeks later. It would cost you absolutely nothing for a retweet. A coach with 200+ wins and 3 straight eastern final appearances leaving for a conference rival is news. Yet you chose to ignore it. That's not news worthy? I understand you work hard on this site, 60hrs a week is tough, I work it too. Takes 5 seconds for a retweet and just a few minutes for the story. I'd suggest trying to work as smart as you do hard if its that big of an inconvenience, otherwise just tell everybody if its not triangle or Johnston County this site could care less and all us outsiders will stop considering this a source of information for our schools. Not gonna speak for the others, but the Hunt fans have supported your site and message board since you started including us a couple years ago. How bout dumping the ones that show no interest here or in tweeting every score into #hsotscores and support the ones that appreciate it and support the site??

    schiess & bleach,

Considering I work 60+ hours a week on HSOT, I can assure you this site is FAR from being ignored. A few things:

    1) I can only speak for HSOT, not any other media outlets, but our resources are limited. I can only be in one place at any given time. I have to chose where I go and how I commit my resources based on many things -- time, distance, interest, website traffic, budget, etc. Those things are not unlimited.

    2) This (the part of the site you're on right now) is not a blog. This is a message board. This is a free space for visitors like yourself to talk about whatever you want to talk about, within reason. There is no way I can talk about every topic in our very large coverage area.

    3) Schiess - I'd be really curious to know about the "all-state" news you've sent to me and I "didn't give you the time of day" because most people who work with me on a regular basis will find that claim hard to believe. We post all-state teams on HSOT when they're released. Perhaps you're confused about what HSOT is... This is NOT a Scout.com, a Rivals.com, etc. We are not a scouting service. We are a media outlet that covers high school sports. Obviously that means we cover recruiting from time to time, but that is very different from recruiting websites.

The claim that this site is ignored is quite laughable though. HSOT has grown exponentially since its launch in 2008. Things that are ignored typically don't grow.

Concerns can always be directed to me at nstevens@wral.com.

Schiess- Actually I think that is the strength of this board, the fact that people can come here to talk/debate/argue about topics and teams that may not be "officially" covered. To ask for a little more would require either A) More resources or B) A school/area with high viewership/readership to not be covered. Either way I don't see the economics there. I'm not trying to make excuses, just trying to say I can at least see where they are coming from.

It's not so much about constant recognition from these outlets but a little more would not hurt .i think the people on this blog aren't asking for too much and if weren't for all the people who contribute to it well it wouldn't last.i guess we should apologize to nick for contributing to his blog and for the passion of highschool football.

If you like it or not, facts are facts. HighschoolOT and it's parent company, WRAL, are in the media business. Ratings, advertising, and site hits drive coverage just like they do in all media (not taking a shot at WRAL, it's just the times we live in). That being said, where would they get the most "bang for the buck"? In the condensed areas of Wake County and closely surrounding schools. Naturally more populated areas means bigger schools which normally equals more viewer/readership It's all about economics, unfortunately. Not saying it's right, but in today's age it kinda is what it is. I think the same thing holds true for the collegiate level as well where D-1 overshadows most other divisions as far as coverage goes. For a point of reference, this is coming from someone who played at a small school and have coached both at small and large schools as well.

Post was not so much for me or my son's behalf as I have a pretty good handle on the process Having gone through it my self, most questionnaire's have a place for a highlight link "thank goodness for Hudle" as well as looking in the Staff Directory for Recruiting Coordinator or Position Coaches emails etc..It's for the many who do not.

Why is Nick Stevens or whoever created this site ignoring it. If you look under Recruiting the info is a year or two old, the last high light videos are from June 2011, I sent a Highlight of my son to the address provided 3 months ago and nothing.

This is a active forum with great news and updates from folks all over the State and yet the One thing this site was created for "High School Sports.... News" is being ignored by the people who created it
