Well in any case what ever college picks up Joyner will have one heck of a STUDENT athlete on the roster. Great character and drive on and off the field. Hope he continues his football career somewhere.

I think it says good things about a coaching staff when after a 3 year run to the eastern finals the only D1 recruit you have signed is DL Lewis Neal, Jacob Page is at Westpoint, not sure he's playing football but I know he was on the Army baseball team last season. Other than that, a scant few FCS football signees. Maybe the Warriors over achieved? The article on Joyner was last week and they said he was considering Richmond and ASU but had not signed. The article was in this past Saturdays paper and Paul Durham noted in his article that Joyner still had visits scheduled for Richmond and Elizabeth City State. GREAT runner, as good as we've had and the Warriors career leader in rushing with 4700+ yards.

Signing period is the same. He did not sign with either according to thier websites. App state does not even have him listed on the offer list on their web site. It may be it is not updated, but he was not on the commit, considering or offer list. Only saw Richmond's signed list and he was not listed.

The paper said it was down between App State and Richmond for Joyner. Not sure when their signing period is or if its even different from D1.

Anyone know if Josh Joyner got picked up by a college?

I'm really pulling for coach Randy Raper to turn around the Northern Nash program. Even though they're our longtime county rivals here at Southern Nash, I think the 3-A Big East Conference is far better off when more of our teams are succeeding. It makes all of us that much stronger. Coach Raper has a proven track record and I'm wishing them much success (as long as it's not against us...lol)

Ya know, it's a bit ironic that not only is Coach Raper moving on from Hunt, but Northern Guilford officially announced this past week that Coach Johnny Roscoe is retiring. It's been rumored for the last couple of years, but I was hoping that he'd stick around. After 3 consecutive years of seeing Raper and Roscoe facing off in the 3-AA Eastern Regionals, it's a little sad to see it come to an end.

On another note, Tom Suiter is a native of Rocky Mount and Ken Medlin went to Southern Nash. I think they've both done a great job in making sure our area is covered here in Nash/Wilson and surrounding eastern counties.

I guess so. I know Hunt didn't finish the job in 3 tries but fact is we're usually on Tom Suiters Fab 15, we played for 3 straight eastern titles, and Raper had over 200 wins in just over 20 years, plus we're less than 45 minutes from WRAL. When HSOT finally decided to include us a few years ago I made it my personal responsibility to tweet all scores to #hsotscores to show appreciation for being included. Our fan base is active on the site and message board. Nick was tweetec the news both times by me only minutes after the Wilson paper broke the stories. Not only was it not worth reporting but he didn't even see the need to retweet it. Thanks to Ken Medlin for showing some love with his retweets and Tom Suiter for his long career of including us, even going so far as to reshow our highlights after some technical issues saying on the air he was doing so because "those folks DESERVE it". As Tom nears retirement I sincerely hope they have a better plan for his replacement than what we find here.

At jsh--Maybe it should be called Triangle plus Johnston Co. HSOT.

It would have probably been reported on here but the powers that be either got a new video game for Christmas they were trying to figure out or there was a Justin the Beaver concert somewhere. Either that or they just didnt care, either way nothing but silence from the HSOT staff on both Raper's leaving and Stevie's hiring 2 weeks later. Maybe they're trying to tell us to just go away??

Some tough outta conference games! Its gonna be a rebuilding year but I welcome the tougher opponents. If we are gonna play on a competitive level we need tough competion. E. Wayne and CBA and Fike aint gonna cut it.

Almost identical to the schedule Hunt Mojo posted a month ago. I guess its a bit more competitive but I'm gonna miss being able to travel within a half hour to all the Hunt road games. Gonna be hard to make it Elizabeth City and Currituck in consecutive weeks but it gives me a great excuse to pack the fishing rod and make weekends out the two!

Former Hunt player- We owned Northern Nash from 1990-1993. Hunt was 3-1 against both Rocky Mount & Northern Nash during that stretch....That being said, we were spanking Northern Nash so badly in '92 we had two touchdowns called back for the infamous "holding" away from the play on two long TD runs....Nash boys had no heart! Raper deserves to play in "Death Valley"...Hinnant will keep the Warrior tradition going...

  • jh2914 Jan 4, 2013

Dont know what the schedule will look like for 2013, but I do know that Coach Hinnant will be getting himself an assistant AD to help him w/ everyday duties. That assistant AD will be Wayne Hardy...the varsity girls basketball coach.

There will be several new schools on the schedule for Hunt. Contracts with Aycock, SWE and Fike have expired for non-conference games and I don't think they're going to play E. Wayne again either. So that leaves Beddingfield as the only remaining non-conference team. Not sure if Hunt will move back to an 11-game schedule but if so, there could be 6 non-conference games.

when NN has been good, it's been very good. And when it's bad, it's been very bad. Nash redistricting should help NN though.

  • MojoMadness Jan 3, 2013

Actually at one time N. Nash was 4A and Hunt played them out of conference. This is back in the mid to late 90s...Hunt owned them.

  • Saint_of Jan 2, 2013

the original 4-A Big East was Hunt, Fike, Beddingfield, Northern Nash, Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City Northeastern, Rose and Kinston.

Conley was 2-A or 3-A in the '80s and New Bern, IIRC, was in the 4-A Mideastern Conference with Goldsboro, Southern Wayne, Jacksonville, Wilmington Laney, Wilmington Hoggard and New Hanover. Eastern Wayne may have been in that one, too.

If Nash Central wasn't around, NN and RM would still be 4-A.

Also, Nash has 4 high schools but it also has about 15-16K more people than Wilson County.

the big east conference was originally a 4a conference correct? all the teams below were in it; northern, rocky mount, rose, dh conley, new bern and northeastern. some of rocky mount kids do live in edgecombe county. imagine what both northern and rocky mount would be like if nash central wasn't around taking kids out of the program! bottom line, i hate having central around. PERIOD.

  • jsh27896 Dec 28, 2012

If they had an extra 800+ students they'd be 4A and not 3A, so dont think they would even be IN the 3A Big East conference. If I'm not mistaken at least a portion of the students that attend Rocky Mount High live in EDGECOMBE County. But you are correct, if NNash was 4A they would be tough for the 3A schools to handle on a regular basis.

We are proud to have Randy coming to Northern Nash. With that being said, here's gasoline for the fire. If Nash Central High School had never been built, Northern Nash would own the big east conference. Northern ran off an impressive 3 years before central was built. after central was built, it took 800+ kids from northern. let someone decide build another high school in wilson county and let's see what happens. wilson has 3 high schools (could be wrong) and nash county has 4. give me a break!

Didn't see that one coming. Kudos for breaking this one early. My money is on Stevie Hinnant taking the job. I think he'll do a great job in carrying on the rich tradition of Hunt Football.

Richie Pridgen? Wasn't he at N. Nash and now on Hunt coaching staff? I wouldnt mind seeing him at the helm. I want play to win play calling. Take the risk and if it fails at least you know you played to win!

Well maybe that's the case but maybe he'll step down as AD. Jh2914 reported it and he knew about the NNash thing over a week ago and I believe my source as well. Don't know who'll be AD but my money is definetly on Stevie as the new head coach.

  • cantbustem Dec 19, 2012

Not so sure about that. The administration does not want the football coach to also be the AD. Regardless, he certainly deserves the job if he wants it.

That one I believe. Stevie's cousin told me he heard both parts over the weekend. He deserves it, been at Hunt as either student, staff, or faculty since the 3rd year the school opened.

With that being said, I thank Coach Raper for his many years of service. Been a good run, 4 eastern final appearances and about 200 wins. Hunt isn't the easiest job. We gripe after the opponent gets 2 positive offensive plays in a row, we gripe after every incompletion or run up the middle for no gain. At the same time the kids learn early it a special thing to be part of and road games where the Hunt fans out number the host schools fans are the rule not the exception. Gonna be big shoes to fill.

@jh2914, my apologies to you. You definetly called it. We have had so many kids from Hunt posting on here and that claim seemed so ridiculous that was my 1st thought. I can't believe it even after reading it. Maybe now Hunt will find a coach who can win a state championship.

Thats a young'n that had an extra 20 seconds today. Thats why our folks always tried to keep us busy. He may not be the coach at Hunt but if he decides to leave its because he's worked hard enough for long enough to enjoy the rewards of it while he's still young enough to enjoy it.
